Both grand theft auto 1&2 are free thanks to their original creators. No longer have the link offhand, but someone should be able to give it to you.

Do a Google search for Grand Theft Auto. You'll come up with plenty of hits to answer your question.

Hm, Gunz looks interesting. Like Matrix-style gun/sword play... Will try it out.

There are a couple of games here that are right up your alley. Challenging but simple.

Microsoft Allegiance has gone opepnsource and is free now. It is a great multiplayer space sim with good graphics. The games concept is unique in that it is a hybrid RTS / space sim where a human commander commands the fleet, gathers resources, researches tech and human players fly the ships. It should play well well even on a P II machine with 56K internet.
While on topic of space sims Freespace 2 has also become free. I cant remember the link now but it should be easy to find.

Aces High is a WW2 combat flight sim with a big player community. it has a 2 week trial period but even after that you can keep playing. They just limit you to 8 player head to head matches.

Wolfenstein Enemy Territory is an awesome free team shooter. It is completly free. It does require a 16 MB minimum video card but most pcs should have better by now.

Superman has been snorting too much Kryptonite again.
Soldat is good for people who like 2D action games, and/or multiplayer shooters. The best part is, it's free, and it runs on just about anything. It remains one of my top favourites.

I'm a fan of Angband, but it isn't for everyone and is hard to learn to play well.

It's similar in some ways to Diablo.

anything where you need to take hours to level you "tree choping level" just to chop down a stupid oak tree is a waste of time...

Escape Velocity: Nova. It's actually shareware, though, but you can do almost everything in-game for 30 days (except for hijacking ships or going very deep into the story arcs, at least). After that it's just $30 to register it, which I gladly did after only a day or two.
