you could also use de-ionized water... but I figured I'd cry too much if dust deposited a significant amount of electrolytes and zap

Which oil would you have to use? They wouldn't all be good, as some would probably still conduct electricity, or play havock with the computer parts.

yes! it's really A computer completely into vegetable oil

before the installation naturally everything finely saeuberlichst deseamed with compressed air.

Pretty much any oil is fine given the relatively low voltages found in a computer, the only thing to worry about is the oil slowly degrading and gumming up various parts, and that can be prevented by keeping the case airtight. Personally I'd use mineral oil or the soy-based oils they now use in high voltage capacitors and transformers.
