Battlefield 2 and Windows 98...

My only computer capable of running BF2 is a Win98 system. Is there any inkling on whether a patch is coming out to allow Win98 support or should I just return the game? Getting XP is out, as this is my dad's machine and he won't put XP on it.

Nothing that I've seen says the next patch (or any other future patches) will support Win98, so I would go ahead and return it.

98 is a no-go, kindly point out to your father that Windows 98 was removed from the "supported" list last year and that it won't BE supported ever agian.

Battlefield2 requires WinXP to even start installing. No patch will change that.

Yeah, that too. WinXP is a thousand times better than Win98 anyways. Why hasn't he upgraded? XP isn't very expensive. (under 250 dollars, IIRC, but don't quote me on it)

Under $150 for Proffesional if purchased with any old hard-drive most places online.

I know, I know. I want XP. He's got some issue against it, and refuses to upgrade, which is just fuck-all for me since I'm a gamer. Now I've gotta buy a computer of my own, which I lack the kind of money to do in any kind of reasonable time frame.

Why not get an exterior HD with WinXP? That way, when you're gaming, you can simply 'swap out' the old HD and plug the XP one in. Exterior HDs aren't too expensive, either.

Lets start a SD.net Fund to get a new compter for Vicious! :D no, seriously, I would recomend telling your dad how it is and, asking him : puppy dog eyes: for the upgrade. tell him about the numerous people who TELL you to do it. also, If you have enough money, offer to buy it or at least go halfway!

If it's just an irrational hatred for XP, he might be persuaded to go with 2000.

If he's stuck with 98 for this long, I would think XP would be a huge fucking improvement to him. I'm just not seeing his logic here. :)

I finally found out just what his gripe is:

The inability to get "under the hood" and monkey with the system if something goes to hell. He also hates Bill with a passion. I hate him too, for being a jackass who forces his shit on everyone (by removing almost all competition, thus forcing me to buy his stuff), but damn, I'll keep with the times thanks.

Blow him. I can reach ALOT more controls in XP then in 98. If hes that insane against Bill, get Linux and some emulation software.

So by "inability" does he mean "I don't know XP as well as 98 so I don't want to have to learn something new"? I can understand that.

Seriously, again, 2000 would be far less of a shock to him than 98 would. 2000 still does quite a few things differently, but the interface is still extremely similar (and, I think, there isn't as much shit buried behind multiple layers of windows). Yes, 2000 doesn't have some of the features that XP does... but 2000 will run Battlefield 2. (And it's still a better OS than 98 overall) 2000 also doesn't have activation shit to worry about, in case your dad's wary of that.

That type of fiddling causes more problem that it fixes. And unless you acknowledge that, it really is a case of a little knowladge is dangerious.

Funny enough, the system defaults are often the best way to get the best preformance(Beyond turning eye candy off).

Microsoft's biggest helping factor is main of thier "competition" couldnt sell condoms to sailors.
