Now that I have my old win 98 box mostly working (endless thanks to Faram and Destructionator XIII for helping with the OS reinstall) I need to run windows update. However, we have a cable modem and they wern't around in 1995. Is it possible to hook up the old computer to the new one and get online that way?

Moreover it does not matter what your connecting with, what you need are a pair of NIC cards(Network Interface cards), these can be had for around $20 a pop these days, get something brandname and the same company like 3-Com, Dlink, Linkus ect

Make your you have a PCI slot free in each computer(Its about five six inches long and its white, ISA are the black ones and the AGP slot is the brown one at the top if you have one)

More detailed help to come assuming you got the right hardware.(Oh and a hub can't forget that)

Why not just a crossover cable?

Or a lan (ethernet based) if you connect to the internet with a router or have more pc's at home.

I asked that wrong. If I hooked the old computer's modem to the new computer's modem (with a phone cord) , while the new one was also connected to the cable modem; Would the old computer be able to access the internet? I have a negative amount of money to spend in the forseeable future so basically anything else is out of the question.

It still wouldn't be able to access it at anymore than dial-up speeds, and you would likely need some sort of router to make them connect properly. (With the speed of the modem at the old computer's end being the bottleneck for that system).

You don't need to buy any hardware other than the NICs and a crossover cable if you're willing to leave one computer on all the time so the other can access the net.

I don't care about the speed. All I'm going to do is update Win98.

That might work, but it wouldn't be worth the trouble involved. You would be better off buying a couple of PCI ethernet network cards and a cat5 cross-over cable. When you have both cards installed, set it up as a peer-to-peer network, and you're done.
