My computer is a paperweight

I logged off my computer Saturday Morning after checking on the showtimes for Charlie and teh Chocoltae Factory for my daughter. As I logged off Windows loaded a new Security update.

Hillarity follows as I now lost my internet connection and a ballon comes up "Your Firewall is turned off, please click this to fix." And then my computer freezes up. I cannot get my mouse to click on anything.

Is there a way to avoid this freeze up or get around it? I have no idea how to get to perhaps Windows XP in safe mode. I know its really vague but that's all I got. My computer loads and then hangs there. Its been like this all weekend and it is fucking frustrating.

Any help would be much appreciated, even telling me how to get Windows XP up in safe mode so MAYBE I can actually click on something and find out what the hell is wrong. It all happened after a Windows security update was loaded.

Safe mode is pretty simple, F8 during startup(after the initial POST screen, where is lines up all your drives).

Thank you. I realized with horror that when I had comouter issues I just did an internet search and voila. Now I can't do an internet search at home and had to sit there in frustration.

I assume that in safe mode nothing that is freezing up my computer will load up.

Is the OS XP?

If so use the system restore.

Start a command propt.

Start->Run->cmd.exe

and type

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

choose restore to an earlier date.

Nothing except the OS and if thats messing up follow Faram's above for the system restore point.

Thanks Faram. I will certainly be doing that as soon as I get home tonight. The cutest moment of my frustrating weekend was my daughter helping me press buttons to help fix daddy's computer.

If it is some kinda worm/virus that requires a net connection, boot into safemode "Without" network access. This can help keep the problem quiet well you take it out.

And while you're in safe mode, scan your machine with AVG if you don't already have some form of anti-virus protection.
