Serial Port-PS/2 Mouse with Win 98 SE

Well, I manged to fry the PS/2 port on my Compaq Presario 1090 ES. I really need a mouse on this laptop. I have this Serial-PS/2 Adapter- But I can't get Windoze to recognize my mouse. Any suggestions? The touchpad is really crudy and you just can't play Total Annihilation with a touchpad anyways.

The adapter will only work if the mouse is designed to work with both PS/2 and serial signalling.

It's just a generic mouse. Um. I guess I'll just go out to a dollar store and get a serial mouse. Oh well.
