Ok, short of uninstalling Real Player (which I do use--atm it's version 10.5) how do I prevent it from running "realsched.exe"? I've tried on more than one occassion in msconfig to disable its startup listing, but it seems it keeps reactivating itself.
Same thing for Quicktime's "qttask.exe" which keeps showing up on the startup list under msconfig, no matter how many times I disable it.

Rename qttask.exe to qttask.old
Try the same thing with realsched.exe

Anytime you run the programs they will re-install themselves.
Get Windows Media Player Classic and leave quicktime and realplayer behind.

You could try
Quicktime alternative and Real alternative, both of which avoid the problem of having the actual programs themselves on the machine. Used them for a long time and always been happy. It comes with media player classic too, which can handle both codecs.
I especially recommend Real alternative, since Real Player was like a fucking parasite on my machine when I had it.

Renaming qttask.exe to qttask.old works. I have used that to disable that element of Quick Time and it works wonderfuly.

Go into the QuickTime Control Panel, go to the Browser Plug-in section and deselect the QuickTime system tray icon option.
RealPlayer's messenging centre has an option somewhere to remove it.
