It's been getting big amongst distros I heard. So how does it compare to the other major distros?

I have no real experience with other distros so I can't comment much on that. The reason I chose ubuntu was that they will ship you out factory made install disks for free to anywhere in the world, meaning I didn't have to bother with downloading the isos or burning them to cd (that is an option).

It is a pretty good distribution, though newer than the Mandrake/SuSE/Fedora triumverate. It is also based on Debian, which is a plus in some people's books.

Most stuff's released in RPM though I hear. Is Ubuntu better for the average user though? Or is that hard to say?

It's a Debian based distro, so it's .deb based, not RPM. I was running Debutu for awhile (Debian+Ubuntu repositories), but downgraded to straight Debian due to the poor stability. Then again, I was running their "unstable" distro which was probably more unstable than Debian's equivalent "unstable."
