Guild Wars any good?

I got a new computer recently, and I've been looking for some games to fill out my library (already snagged most of the ones I've been waiting to get like DOW and BF1942). Anyway I saw Guild Wars at the local EB the other day and noticed the big 'Free Online Play' thing on the side..
So that leaves me with two questions-
1.) Is it any good?
2.) What's the catch? Seriously, free online play?

1. Many attest to it, and trying it, for standard MMORPG fare, it's not bad.
2. You have to buy expansions for other areas when they come out.

Okay so the expansion packs need to be bought, nothing wrong with that.. but the online play is seriously free? No hidden costs or anything like that? (sorry about my rampant skepticism but I've never seen one of those that was free)

As free as any FPS or RTS or whatever played online. That is, you still have to pay $50 for the game, you still have to pay your ISP, and so on but other than that... free. You don't need a credit card.

*Adds guild wars to 'The List'*
Always wanted to try an MMORPG.. but something about having to pay to play a game I've already paid to own grates on me (Yes I do understand why most MMORPGs charge, bandwidth, patching, etc. is expensive after all).

It was partly written by the guys who wrote Diablo II, which as you should be aware, was a RPG that could be played online for free. They've just made it a RPG that has to be played online.

I honestly didn't like Guild Wars, but thats just me. I like to interact with other characters, have a town to live in, roleplay, and many other fun things that are very hard to do in Guild Wars. The only time you will see other players not part of your group is when you head back to town. When you're on a mission, its instanced, so you can never run into anyone randomly. Ever.
The missions I've heard of are quite fun, but the entire game (minus arena combat which is supposedly pretty cool) can be played just like a single player game, which is great for those who solo, but why would you play an online game so you can play by yourself?
Ok, I'll stop ranting.

if you don't want to play solo find a team and don't
Its as simple as that. The game would be impossible without the towns as safe havens.

Let's put it this way. I've been waiting for my exams to be over for nearly three weeks, so I can go on a guild wars binge without feeling guilty, and I'm having trouble studying because I'm thinking about it all the time lol. But that is just me.
My laptop comes back on Monday, and my exam is done on Thursday so I'll be able to play on Friday... and then there's two days of work... argh.

Yes, you can't randomly run into players online, but you also don't have 1000 person long lines to do quests.

See, I play Star Wars Galaxies. There aren't lines to do quests. I have a house to show off my loot. I can live in a town, with its own cantina, mayor (fully electable), taxes, my own spaceship. I can be exploring a planet and come upon a group of enemies about to assault my faction's base, call in help, and pin them between the base and us, crushing them utterly. Or they beat us and destroy the base. I can run into a friend and ask them how the war is going on their planet, if they bought anything new for their house, how are the politics in their town, or many other things. I can go to parties and weddings in beautifully player-furnished buildings. I can go on missions on 11 planets, fighting thousands of different animals and NPCs, doing a plethora of quests without having to "wait in line." I can take 2 missions at once all across the cosmos (and a ton of quests at once too). I can fly around the planets, mining or destroying ships all over (plus also taking space missions).
Guild Wars has towns and instanced quests. The only people you'll see are those in town or those in your groups on missions. Also, I've heard of the arena, but don't know much about it.

I've been playing it for a bit, and I'm really enjoying it.
Heheh.. break-dancing rangers. And two female monks doing synchronized kung-fu moves (I assume that's the monk's dance command?)
