Leipzig Games Convention - Leipzig , Germany - August 19, 2005 - LucasArts and Sony Online Entertainment Inc. ( SOE ) today unveiled Star Wars Galaxies: Trials of Obi-Wan to the cheers of Star Wars Galaxies ™ enthusiasts gathered for a fan breakfast at the 2005 Games Convention in Leipzig , Germany. This third expansion to the popular immersive online game is scheduled for release on November 1st, alongside the Star Wars : Episode III Revenge of the Sith theatrical DVD and Star Wars Battlefront ™ II video game. The companies also revealed that more than 1 million units of the Star Wars Galaxies franchise have now been sold, a testament to its ongoing popularity.

Like Obi-Wan Kenobi after his death, Star Wars Galaxies has become "more powerful than you can possibly imagine." Appropriately, Trials of Obi-Wan allows players to better understand the meaning of these final words spoken by Luke Skywalker's mentor, as they embark upon missions delivered directly from the spirit of the revered Jedi Master himself. From the very shores of molten lava where he defeated Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan guides players on quests that span the planet Mustafar - some of which might even convert devotees of the dark side over to a more virtuous path. This expansion features many new high-level quest rewards, including the ability to find a fiery red crystal found only on the volcanic planet that creates a lava-like lightsaber for the lucky owner. Players who fulfill all of Obi-Wan's directives will also receive a rich reward.

Mustafar colonists present many exciting trials of their own, too, as Trials of Obi-Wan includes more than 50 new quests for the galaxy's bravest adventurers, from rescue missions to the exploration of a crashed Republic cruiser. Many quests also revolve around a prominent figure from Star Wars ® : Knights of the Old Republic ® who returns 4,000 years after his prime with one simple mission in mind: Eliminate all meatbags.

"With Trials of Obi-Wan being an expansion set for release via digital download the same day as the Episode III DVD, we can't think of a better planet to add to Star Wars Galaxies than Mustafar," said Julio Torres, Producer at LucasArts. "Meanwhile, including the spirit of Obi-Wan nicely bridges the prequel era and the more classic-oriented time period depicted in the game. We're really excited about continuing mythology established by other LucasArts games, as well."

The release of Trials of Obi-Wan will provide a significant boost to a franchise that has already sold more than 1 million units worldwide. In recent months, interest and subscriptions in Star Wars Galaxies has grown, fueled by recent game additions, as well as the connection of the game content to Star Wars : Episode III Revenge of the Sith.

"A lot of positive changes have taken effect since Star Wars Galaxies first launched," said Nancy MacIntyre, LucasArts' Senior Director for the game. "We've picked up quite a few new fans and reintroduced many others to the game, especially since the Rage of the Wookiees expansion in May. Trials of Obi-Wan will only further this positive momentum."
I'd be happier with SOE fixing the content they already have instead of adding new stuff. I can't believe they're going to rape a pillage the memory of HK-47, have they no shame?!

SOE haven't got a clue. I cancelled when the combat downgrade went live and, after renewing my account twice (just to see if it had improved), I decided I'm never going to waste another penny on that travesty of a game.

Mustafar, hah! */forceChoke1 SOE*

Edit: I take it back, they do have a clue, but only about milking cash cows. They need to buy a clue about Star Wars, though.

Wow, quests handed out by Obi-Wan's ghost?

If he had left a corpse, it'd be spinning in it's grave.

Isn't everything down to the most retarded toy or children's book supposed to be canon?

Isn't HK-47 a character from the KOTOR games? Wow, that is pretty lame. So is the lava-lightsaber in this new expansion.

Actually a lot of stuff has been slotted into Apocyrpha. Most notably games, except cinemas which are considered on the level of lower end of offical. Still there, but can be overriden by higher sources.

As for the expansion....wow, more places for people to farm.

Behold the crappy screenshots! Link

I have to ask, why is Obi Wan wearing his TPM lightsaber in the screenshot?

I love Star Wars Galaxies. I play it everyday... But even still, this expansion pack has left me a bit dumbfounded.

The only bright side I can see is that the Jedi can no longer bitch about lack of Jedi content.

The only reason I want to see Hk-47 running around Galaxies is under GM control sniping Jedi's with orbiting turbolasers.

And no other reason.

They're slowly phasing the entire game from an OT setting to a PT setting. Why? Marketting, and because it's popular with kids.

No offense to any of you who still play this, but how you can still give SOE money for this pile of shit is beyond me. Spend your money on something useful instead.

Hell, even Dagobah could have been a decent choice if they insisted on having a mostly Jedi-related planet, what with all the lifeforms and a Jedi who is actually still living. Wasn't the whole point of adding Kashyyyk to cash in on Ep III and add related content? This is just SOE doing their thing again.

Also notice how they're counting total sold copies, not total current subscribers. Throw in some statistics on how many of those subscribers even log in regularly or how many are on at any given time (I heard only 25% of subscribers logged in the week it was announced the live team listed the combat rebalance as 3rd in importance behind the expansion & Jedi revamp), and 'one million units sold' won't look too impressive.

I was under the impression that there wasn't much on Mustafar in the first place. "Here's where a bunch of people died." and that's about it.

You forgot Hoth, alot of people were asking for Hoth even before RotW came out, but hey, atleast they admitted one thing; "we can't think".

They're most likely hping to cash in on the Ep III hype again, alot of people signed up, even if it was only for a month, when Ep III was out in the cinemas, but they're deluding themselves if they think they can con a fanbase the same way, twice.

Indeed, it seemed like the vast bulk of the planet was covered in lava. How there can be many adventures on a world mostly covered with the most deadly substance in video gaming is beyond me.

Ahh, proof why SOE is the single most evil MMORPG Company out there. MCH still is screwed ovr and they keep adding stuff to game.

Glad I switched to WoW.

*cry*

I played SWG from launch until this past June. All I wanted it to do was improve...to stop being the laughing stock of MMORPGs...to not be one big boring grind. After two years....

Who knows, I may download this expansion and subscribe for a month just to see my old friends and complete the quests. Until then...WoW and Battlefield 2 for me I guess. There are things in SWG that are superior to WoW, but WoW is just more *fun*. That's a whole different thread, though...

You know the worst part about all this? The devs are actually pushing the game backwards in time and rather than advancing the storyline to TESB and probably attracting many fans of the moves, they instead decide to add a planet thats completely irrelevant to the Galactic Civil War (I mean at least Kashyyyk made some sense) but MUSTAFAR???? Come on! seriously guys, Galaxies isn't doing too well as a whole and I dont think that mucking it up with random Jedi wanks will improve the game. Especially well known Jedi.

The best thing they could do would be add to add Hoth, not as a new planet, but like, a giant PvP battle ground Imps and Rebs going at it in a giant game of Capture the Flag or something. That would be great, it advances the story and opens up whole new areas of exploration. I mean, I can't think of any serious Star Wars fan that dosent wish that the Battle of Hoth was longer and expanded upon.

Most of the people I talked to find the entire premise of Trials of Obi-Wan idiotic and devoid of any logical thought whatsoever, but the sad thing is, everyone I talked to said that they were going to buy it, we dont want to be left behind when there are probably going to be a whole ot of new quests and content, but it pisses us off that they only way anything will change is if we either quit or stop buying the expansions. Thats the silent majority for you.
