I've just been lured into the wonderful world of VoIP with Skype.com I was wondering who else here has used it? Anyone else with Skype? Anyone use another VoIP system?

Anyone got any recommendations, warnings, stories?

I use it very frequently. My only recommendations are a broadband connection and a decent microphone/speakers. SkypeOut works remarkably well and is great for making long distant phone calls. Occasionally, depending on the quality of your connection, you might get a drop in quality of service, or the connection completely cut out, but it still functions remarkably well if you ask my opinion. Especially when you consider the savings from long distance calls.

So far, I only had good experience with Skype. Great for team conferences... :)

I use Skype to allow my family in the US to call me for free, I bought a SkypeIN number in their local area, I also bough the Skype wireless phone USB kit, very nice and top quality sound.

Can anyone explain whats the differance with Skype that makes it unique from such things like Ventrilo/Messenger?
From this thread I gather its a point to point voice chat program, no allowance for multiple conversations at the same time?

You can give and recieve calls from hard telephone lines at scarily cheap rates? You can buy a number that is local to people you know (for like 20 bucks a year) and they call you for free as it's local rate? The quality is also far greater than Vent/Messenger.

Okey, VOIP, thats a serious draw *starts looking into credit cards to use for this*. And the quality, I really don't care about that one, hows its affect on game pings? Since I usually 1v1 I don't really care about large vent servers, and MSN voice is too laggy I'm intrested in another good voice program.

I play games while using it all the time, doesn't cause me any lag whatsoever. Granted I have a phat downstream, but my upstream is only 256kbps so yeah, works great. Also you can pay for all Skype services with Paypal. Best of all, when using SkypeOUT it only charges you based on credit you've paid for, can't go over it. So no scary massive bills etc :D

It's like a really cool pay as you go mobile for your PC :)

I'd love to use Paypal for many things, but Paypal requires initially a credit/debit card ;) but thats a whole vent.

And sounds good, I'll look into aquiring it, Ace Pace incoming onto the Skype network ;)

You can use it comp to comp for free so no need to wait.

For me thats not a big draw, I'll get it anyways, but I don't see the P2P chatting as something that I'd use alot.

Give it a try first, it kicks the ass of all the other voice chat options I've encountered.

Can you write while crazily dodging gunfire and upshooting a bunch of T's on Dust2? :P

Voice chat is awesome, it won't replace my IM programs but its a good use of mics ;)
