Video issue on my PowerBook: any suggestions?

I preface this with the reminder that I am not at all computer savvy when it comes to fixing things that go wrong.
Ok, I still have OS X because I haven't gotten around to getting Tiger yet (let me know if that will fix it in and of itself because then I'll just pick that up this week). I have Quicktime, Windows Media Player, Real Player, and now DivX (which is more an extension of Quicktime than it's own thing, I believe I was told?). At the current time, I can view Quicktime videos such as the Narnia trailer and the Goblet of Fire trailer but not this Goblet trailer, which is also Quicktime. For the one that doesn't work, I get the message, "Don't have Quicktime? Click here to download."
What happens when I tried to install DivX in an attempt to be able to watch the first episode of Dr. Who, which has an .avi extension, is that DivX went through the motions of being installed but never concluded the installment in any fashion. It didn't ask me to restart my machine, nor did it tell me that it had successfully completely the installation. Obviously because it didn't, but why not?
When I've tried to play the video, I get the message that the file format isn't recognized. Does it sound like I have some sort of virus? Is there a way to delete the Quicktime program I have now that only works for some things and download it again? I have the latest available versions of everything, and have checked Apple for updates to see if there are bugs in any of it, and I've found nothing.
