Just lately my monitor suddenly had the viewable surface on the sides drop, this resulted in large black spots on the sides with the image very tall and skinny with the aspect ratio completely fucked over. Yet there is no color distortion or loss of color in the image which does show up, it just doesnt cover the entire viewable surface of the monitor.

However on the right most of the pojected area (the black spots are pure black, the projector isnt touching it at all) there is color distortion in the black area with some white vertical bands.

I normally run at 1024x768x32 @ 75hz which is well within the monitor's specs.

How old is the monitor? Have you tried degaussing it? Is it still within warranty?

You might start looking into a new monitor now, before this one dies and leaves you without one.

Degaussing didnt do anything beyond make the image blue for a few seconds.

Also the viewable area on the sides dropped again when fiddling with some of the geometry controls, and it is at least 4 years old and out of warranty.
