PS2 not working

I accidentally left my PS2 running for 3 days straight, paused on GTA:SA, and now it's not working properly. I can get into the browser fine and it recognises my memory cards, but it says "Reading disc..." and never does. It makes a strange creaking noise when trying to read the disc.
So, what's the problem? Can I fix it? Or should I suck it up till March '06 when I can buy a PS3?

Something wrong with the component reading the disk? Leaving it on for three days must've fucked up the moving components. Can't you bring it to a store and have some technonician open it up to fix up the parts?

Depends on how much it'll cost I suppose. I'm planning on buying a PS3 when it comes out. By all indications the PS3 will cost nearly $400. I will look into how much repairing the PS2 will cost though.

That might actually be more expensive than going out and buying a new PS2. One of the pitfalls of living in a throwaway society is that it cost's more to get what you own fixed rather than buying a new replacement.
You might simply want to save up and wait for the PS3 to come out next year.

Needless to say, I'm rather pissed at myself. PS3 apparently will not support the old PS2 memory cards so basicly my save games are lost. Before now, I wasn't really that concerned about that because I figured I would just play my PS2 games on the PS2.

Really? As far as I know, the PS3 will be compleatly retro-compatable in regards to the hard ware. If what you say is true, I'll have to make sure that I keep my PS2 when I get my PS3.

I've heard it from a number of sites although I'm not sure if it's "official". Here's a
link I found about it. Just a blog though.
It's not fathomable that sony would do this without some solution in mind.

this is why I'm not getting a PS3 until it's very damn well tested throrouhgly; the PS2 was the first game machine I have had in my ENTIRE gaming life
that just stopped working properly.

Look on the net for cleaning guides before you throw out the Playstation. The disc reader in the PS2 can be a fickle beast at times, but with a little coaxing you should be able to make it work again.
Of course, opening up the case yourself does void the warranty, so be sure in your ability to make it work before you do so. Not sure what the coverage on warranty is like, but if that still covers it I'd say go for that, and if the warranty don't cover it then you have nothing to lose by opening it up yourself and having a go at repair.
