Freelancer is a pretty good pirate game... kind of. You can play as a space pirate and raid freighters and transports.

I'm currently attempting to pick up the new version of Sid Meier's Pirates on ebay for cheap-as-chips monies. Not sure if it's worth it, the original was supposed to be excellent, but I'm in a piratical mood of late and would certainly be wooed by Johnny Depp in heavy eyeliner.

Sid Meier's Pirates! is good.

Ignore Freelancer - its rubbish, X2 is your god now.

But for absolute wonderful classic - Monkey Island! YARR!

The Secret of Monkey Island is among the best games ever made, pirate or no.

Avast I add my support to you hoisting the Jolly Roger over Sid Meir's Gem. Go Dance with the Governer's Daughter, Rescue your poor family from the Crutch's of the foul and untrustworthy Count. Raid The Spanish Main, and dig up that Buried Treasure me Hearty.

Yehar, Sid Meirs Pirates! is the most piratey simulation of them all, but the best game involving the demon/voodoo/undead/flaming/zombie/ghost pirate LeChuck (and LeChimp ;) are the monkey island (adventure) games

I really enjoyed SEADOGS, when it first came out several years ago.

Monkey Island is good, but it's an adventure game about pirates rather than a pirate game.

For a game about pirating, the new version of Sid Meier's Pirates! blows away everyone.

Sid Meiers pirates is the most common favorite but my vote goes to Pirate Hunter, which I thought was breathtaking

Are we talking the classic DOS pirates! Pirates Gold! or the new Sid Meier's Pirates!

I played and loved the original DOS version and was wondering about the new one they have out with updated graphics.

The Necromancer (n).- A name for Sauron during his stay in Mirkwood.
Thread Necromancer (n).- One who ressurects a thread more than two weeks old without added content.

But on that subject before this gets locked, I too was wondering about the new Pirates! Assuming somebody knowledgeable arrives before that, is it that good of a game for a mostly casual game-player and Pastafarian?

The new game is awesome for casual gaming, since it's basically a bunch of minigames strung together (swordfighting, sailing, naval battles, among others) and can be played entirely with the keypad (or the mouse and the arrow keys if you lack a keypad). It's much better than the original and very fun.
