My laptop is overheating - any way to control the fan?

The last few days my laptop has began to seriously overheat. For some reason I can no longer hear the fan spinning during normal processes [or any process for that matter, apart from the boot-up.]
Thus, is there any way to make my fan spin via a piece of software?

Not usually, unless there's something in the power saver software that comes with your laptop.

Can you see the fan? On a lot of laptops it's underneath, and should be quite visible. If you can, make sure it's not fouled by something. If it's not spinning at all, and your laptop does start to overheat you'll start to experience some odd behaviour, most usually random poweroffs.[/i]
