MSN Messenger isn't a charging service, or at least, MS is rather slow to send me a bill for all my useless chats using it.

Messenger isn't; the chatrooms are. They started charging about a year and a half ago, as I recall.

Eh, I don't like Microsoft, but this really isn't any worse than Gmail. In any case, never used MSN services other than Hotmail before I switched to Yahoo and then Gmail.
