So how do you go about determining what kind of RAM chips your mother board takes and how do you install them without frying it?

Go to
Crucial. There is a tool there that allows you to determine what kind of RAM you need, but you have to know what your motherboard is.

Find out if the manufacturer of your system has a list of reccomended upgrades on thier site.
For installing the RAM make sure you are wearing an anti-static wrist strap

You could just look at what RAM is installed. If it already works with your system, any new stuff will too.

Wrist straps aren't necessary at all. Just touch something metallic, like the PSU, to discharge any built up static.
Also, when installing the ram modules themselves, it can take a surprising amount of force to get them in even when everything is lined up. I learned this the hard way after fucking around for 3 hours and then finding out I was pushing hard enough.
