I need a mech game...

Could be anything. Freeware, years old, whatever. I don't care. But it needs...
#1 - To let me build up a unit, mercenary style.
#2 - To NOT end and take away my built-up unit just because I killed the Big Bad Guy. God I fucking hate that. It's like if Sim City arbitrarily decided you "win" at some point, and deleted your save file.

Mechwarrior 4 might fit your bill, I've also heard that Black knight (The expansion) lets you customize an even larger squad.

I have Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries, and it's fun, but it's the perfect example of a game that screams "FUCK YOU, NO MORE FUN!" once you complete it's dumbass badly-acted little storyline.

Titans of Steel if you like turnbased strategy games. There is an older freeware version and the Titans of Steel Waring Suns by Matrix Games which is the latest incarnation of the TOS Series.

I have the retail version of TOS... Guess I could play that... But it's less of a game and more of a combat engine loosely connected to a character database.
EDIT: Plus it's piss-boring and having your noob pilots trip every third turn sucks.

Front Mission, if you want some simplified console Turn based Strategy. It's like Disgaea or Final Fantasy Tactics with oddly named mechs.
I only wish they made a version of Mech Commander that was turn based. Wouldn't that have been fun? Playing BT with MC2 graphics?
Edit: TOS:WS bites. It's terribly boring, and you're much better off even playing Megamek than that peice. It was a bad single player experience and the combat system is INCREDIBLY slow. It's like playing a whole game of Civ every single mission.

Of course, you're limited to simulator missions after completing the main campaign, which never change (they're not randomly generated, so get old). You can start a New Game+ in Front Mission 4, but this only carries over pilot skills and not Wanzer configurations. In Front Mission 3's case, you don't get either option, though the two campaigns available (Emma and Alisa) are both incredibly long, somewhat offsetting the lack of replay value.
For an older game, there's Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries. The final patch for the game (version 1.3, I think) made it so that generic missions are randomly generated after completing the main campaign. Most of these are so easy, though, that they're hardly worth the C-Bills. Also, getting it to work under Windows XP can be an utter bitch.

You should probably be playing Armored Core. The best ones in the series where Armored Core 1 and its expansions (Project Phantasma and Masters of Arena). Granted, Masters of Arena is kinda buggy. Armored Core 2 was a real chore to play, but I found 3 and 3: Silent Line to be much more enjoyable.
Armored Core has always been about being a mercenary, buying parts, and building a machine out of those parts.
Armored Core 1 is for Playstation, all the rest are PS2.

Then you would probably be interested in the new Unoficial MechPack by
MekTek.
EDIT - I
made a thread about it containing more information.
