Why are my screencaps so fucking dark?

Here's an example from a bunch of screenshots I took today (I took around 80 or so of Episode IV, originally I set out to take screencaps of as many cases of the DLT-19 as possible, but I just started clicking like wild because I felt like it).

Look how bloody dark it is. That's not how it looks like when I'm watching DVDs on my PC.

And while I'm at it, does anyone know how to do frame-by-frame progression on PowerDVD 6?

Power DVD -->configuration ---> video ---> color control. Adjust that.

I don't know if it can be slowed down enough for a frame by frame progression...

Your screencapture is brighter than mine.

Mine is the top one (with the yellow star in the corner) and yours is the bottom one. But my screencaptures also have the same brightness as when they are being played. I never thought it was extremely dark though but now I think maybe it is.

I don't have power dvd but Intervideo WIN DVD has a menu that looks like this:

The top yellow circle advances a single frame. The bottom one rewinds a frame. Maybe yours has something similiar?

Shit. Mine looks like that? Doesn't look like that on my home PC- but again the DVD as I'm actually watching doesn't look like that. It's so weird. I must be missing something ... but what?

I'm at a different PC now- the PC of a friend (Aoe III LAN tonight, w00t) and all of a sudden my screencap looks fine. I don't get it. My screen is certainly not abnormally dark, but something, somewhere, is wrong with my PC's brightness in relation to captured images.

My brother introduced me to virtuadub. I don't do much video editing or dvd capture at all, but virtuadub's free maybe it's worth a shot.
