How do I capture video clips from a DVD?
I have Windows Movie Maker, a DVD player/burner on my computer, and some DVDs. I need to grab some clips from these DVDs for a school project (music video for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest), how do I do this? Do I need some special program?

You need to break the law. Specifically, you need to violate the DMCA, which is arguably in turn a violation of the Constitution, but so far there has not been a high-court challenge of the DMCA on Constitutional grounds.
That being said, what you need is software like DVDShrink or SmartRipper or DVD Decrypter. These are all illegal, of course. But they work fine for ripping a clip or an entire movie onto hard disk, where you can use other tools to turn it into an AVI or some other format.

Yeah, I'm wondering if Uts and I should maybe think about getting a new one that has better hardware compatability and software support.

Once you *ahem*useDVDDecrypter*ahem* to make an image of the DVD on your hard drive, then you can use any app you want to make your clips.HemlockGrey wrote:I have Windows Movie Maker, a DVD player/burner on my computer, and some DVDs. NeroVision Express is what I used to edit down and recode the clips I made in my 'obscure movies' thread in the Off-Topic forum.
Though interestingly enough, the 'J-Men Forever' disc mentioned in the thread isn't DSS encrypted.

I've personaly found virtuadub to be good for the cutting up for clips thing (this is after you have the decoded movie). It is probably more powerfull then what you need but the basic options you can figure out pretty easily.
Its main drawback is that the output can only be in .avi, tho if that is a problem depends on you.

If you want to use virtualdub, get VitualDubMad. which has the abiliy to read MPEG-2 files. It can convert those to AVI files readable by your NLE program.mmar wrote:I've personaly found virtuadub to be good for the cutting up for clips thing (this is after you have the decoded movie). www.doom9.org has all the DVD-capture and encoding information you'll ever need, as well as software downloads.
I am capable of rearranging the fundamental building blocks of the universe in under six seconds. I shelve physics texts under "Fiction" in my personal library! I am grasping the reigns of the universe's carriage, and every morning get up and shout "Giddy up, boy!" You may never grasp the complexities of what I do, but at least have the courtesy to feign something other than slack-jawed oblivion in my presence. I, sir, am a wizard, and I break more natural laws before breakfast than of which you are even aware!
