True Crime: New York City

Anyone else pick this one up yet? I was curious. The commercials looked nice, and I played Streets of LA. SoLA wasn't that great so I wasn't expecting much, but hey, I had a free rental at Blockbuster to burn.

I rather like it, actually. Th opening title with Welcome to New York by JAY-Z and Cam'ron was pretty damn good. I was also pleasently surprised to hear Laurence Fishbourne's voice in the opening narration. And then I got to playing the game and saw New York City.

Wow. It looks fucking great. It has a nice dark and gritty feel to it (as the setting of the game fits well) and it looks suberb. I love just driving around, taking in the sights. The weather is nice too, especially the rain, lightning, and thunder. Great effects.

Then there's gameplay. I find it a surprising amount of fun to just go around and do the street crimes. Hell, I had so much fun that I worked my way to Detective 1st Grade (the highest rank) before even doing the first story mission. And I barely noticed the time go.

The game does have some flaws, but I've been able to deal so far (except for one annoying freeze-up, but that was one in God-knows-how-many-hours of play and it didn't really cost me anything). People have also mentioned a slow framerate on the PS2, but thus far I haven't noticed it. And the driving does take some getting used to, but now I'm pretty comfortable with it and can cruise along nicely.

I'm definately enjoying this game. I think I'll go out and buy it for Christmas. Or sooner. :D

Anyone else played it yet?

Is it just as craptacular as True Crime: Streets of LA? Have they just changed the setting and not fixed any of the problems - like the 30m clipping place and shitty shitty game mechanics?

I never really played SoLA, so I can't talk about the game mechanics. These feel good though. The precision aim is very nice and the lock-on works great. It's also been very smooth gameplay for me on my PS2.

I am a big fan of TC:SoLA, and am looking foward to playing this, but am going to wait a bit for the price of it used at EB drops a bit.

I have TC:SoLA for the PC and I quite liked it. :) So I am going to wait for TC:NYC to come out for the PC. :)

I can't help but think they're cheap GTA clones.

Probably. But I'll admit, there's one thing TC:NYC gave me that GTA didn't: good police chases. Not them chasing you, but you chasing the bad guy. It is very fun (and pretty intense) to pursue a suspect and then all the police cars you run across join in, weaving in and out of traffic, going the wrong way down one way streets, and so on.

And your backup is even pretty decent, at times. Sure they'll smash into cars and stuff, but on the whole they've managed to keep up with me and the suspect fairly well (hell, even done better than I have at times  ).

Plus I loved the bullet time. Especially during the car chases. :):):)

I have a question for the New Yorkers. Just out of curiosity, I took a stroll down to the WTC site (I did the same in Spiderman 2, where it was a big open plaza with the memorial lights). What they have is basically a boarded up area around it, and two orange cranes in there for some reason (it doesn't even look like that area got fully rendered, but since there's no way to get in AFAIK I guess it's not too big a deal). The rest is just brown ground (as far as I can see, since I can't really get the camera in for a good look).

How accurate is that?

I can't understand such questions about the sequel to a game featuring roadside rapes every forty five seconds and a Santa Monica mall full of XXX stores and rapes. Accuracy? What's that?

Well, the geography is supposedly pretty realistic. As for the rest, well...

I'm sure some cops out there would like to settle all domestic disputes by beating the shit out of those involved, but sadly they can't. :)

Oh, no more roadside rapes. Now it's various serial rapists that pop up ever thirty minutes or so (in an apartment at least).

The full-out gang wars with military-grade weapons are fun though. Had three of those in twenty minutes tonight (man, Harlem sure is a shithole). :D
