SMP server suggestions

I've been assigned to look for a 4 processor (or 2 dual core? ) server for running computationally intensive applications on Win2K3 for work. The university's IT deparment responsible for maintaining and managing the servers appear to prefer Dell, HP, or Gateway in that order (not sure about Sun).

Reliability and performance in that order are the primary criteria (although I'm not sure if he means reliability as in full redundancy or just build quality- at this level of cost, is there really much of a difference between major vendors?).

Yes. Dell remains the low-priced vendor. I would prefer HP servers over Dell.

We're going w/ a dual socket Opteron 280 DL145 server from HP w/ 1 processor and 1 gig of RAM for 1600$ (EDU discount).

Sounds good - I'm considering building an Opteron 165 box for myself, actually.
