I need a replacement for Ares, because I can't get anything with it. It has a short network horizon which kills the number of returns on a search, and it has an infuriating habit of either getting the file immediately (rare) or not getting the file at all (very common). KCeasy is right out because it's essentially a Gnutella client with buggy-as-hell Ares "support" with the OpenNap network being a running joke. Edonkey/mule/ass/etc are good proggies, but the network is slow as hell. Bittorrent I can't get to work because I can't forward ports through my router because I can't remember the user/pass for the bloody thing (hacking it's not an option because it's a small boring piece of really autistic hardware that runs linux: it does the router thing very well, but try to persuade it to cough up the magic kets and it'll just go "Huh? WTF are you on, mang?")!

I'm giving thought to putting Kazaa Lite back on here if nothing pans out simply because of the huge network (and bigass net horizon)...

Limewire is pretty good, and ptorrent is quite good at forwarding ports, have you tried it? (I have the same problem and it works although at >11kb/s speeds)

You could try to activate Universal PnP in your bittorrent app. If you are lucky, your router will have UPnP activated and so the app will be able to open/foward the ports necessary. A good torrent client with UPnP support is uTorrent.

As far as general-purpose p2p recommendations, if you have a decent shareable collection, dc++ seems to be the best. Once you have a couple of good hubs bookmarked (just get them off the public hublist - best hubs are those with high required share and lots of users), you can usualy find even rare stuff easily and there are a lot of scandinavians with fat pipes using it so with a little luck (or being selective from who you download from in case of popular files) you can get speeds that max out your download bandwidth (unless you also have a very good (ie. 5mbit+ I'd say) connection).

Torrent is better for new releases, however DC++ is better at finding older/rarer stuff.

On Linksys, it's [blank]/admin

Plus you can just hold down the reset switch in the back.

I'm somewhat leery of the Big Red Reset Button methodology. Would the router possibly stop considring my two computers as privileged enough to use it (I.E. network completely breaking)?

I recommend Azureus, it's never let me down.

No. And if by some chance it did it would now be using the default password so you could just go in and reconfigure the bad boy so it would acknowldge your computers. Wouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes unless it's it's a hell of a lot more complicated than any router interface I've ever seen.

If your router is also your cable/dsl modem be sure to have line settings handy (or at least make sure that your ISP is willing to tell you the settings over the phone).

Bah, I broke down and put Kazaa Lite on this bitch...
