The King of all Monster PVRs
Powered by SnapStream Beyond TV 4

Introduction:

With the third installment of our Monster PVR series, we here at SnapStream asked ourselves, “How can we beat the Medusa PVR, our 6 tuner beast, and our Hydra PVR, our 10 tuner monster?”

Why, by making an 11 tuner system with HDTV support, of course! This is when the Godzilla PVR system, king of all monsters was born. How do we top the Hydra PVR? This system is an ultra high end HTPC showcasing Beyond TV 4 and capable of recording 11 shows, 4 high definition and 7 standard definition, at once. With Beyond TV 4’s HDTV support and with its unlimited tuners, you can create your own monster system.
Follow linky to read more. I, like some of the commenters there think that this is a little overkill. Just the 4 HD tuners or the 7 SD tuners by themselves would have been enough. The case is so cramped that they had to opt for external HD tuners.

Still doesn't mean I don't want one. 8)

Never thought about it that way, but then you really don't need the HD tuners, most cctv is still in SD. Also, the case itself doesn't lend itself well to such a task, you're better off putting it in an older style tower sever case, or modified CR-R copy case.

ATI is supposed to have some CableCard tuners coming out this year. If they support analog, digitial and HD decoding on the same chip, I might build an HTPC. The Beyond TV 4 software looks pretty sweet (it looks better than what the DirecTv Tivo's software), and I could also put a DVD drive (maybe even HD or Blu-ray). Then I would have one box replace both my current set-top-box and the DVD player. And it would be possible to record three channels at a time (sometimes two isn't enough).

But the CableCard tuner would have to support the 2.0 spec (since it supports bidirectional communication so I can use OnDemand and PPV). The hardware would have to handle DRM issues, as well. And the price wouldn't have to be too insane.

But the idea of a HTPC is damn temping!
