Speaker for under $100?

My Toshiba built-in speakers on the laptop are loud but their quality isn't that great.
Maybe that would be the same for speakers in my price-range but does anyone have suggestions? It needs to be under $100 because I'm going to return the headset in the other thread I made back and I need to waste the credit on something so it might as well be speakers which I could use.

Would you consider headphones? A number of companies make pretty good 5.1 (physical) channel headphones.

Maybe get better headsets? There are several good choices in the $100 range (and no, those gimmicky multi-driver surround ones don't count :P )

I am going to get the Altec Lansing headset that was suggested in the other thread from another place which leaves store credit to be spent.

I don't really like to wear headphones/headsets unless I have to and even then it would be ear-buds.

The speakers are mainly for music.

Surround sound headphones are pretty worthless IMO. I've tried some, and the sound was just muddy and even the 3d aspect was usually inferior to any decent pair of stereo headphones I've had. I've owned some really nice Sennhesiers for under 100 dollars, before I upgraded to my HD595s. :D
I personally prefer headsets to speakers, you can crank up the sound without disturbing anyone (pretty useful for anyone who has infants in the house...), the sounds are more personal, and 3d sound is very precise.

Given how decently my dad's old 70's era bookshelf speakers that he built himself work, in your position, I'd be tempted to hit up places like Goodwill for a cheap set of bookshelf speakers and an amplifier.
