Yes, my shiny new Opteron 165 is now running smoothly at 2.4GHz :D

How long can it go before Prime95 croaks on you?

Probably untill the CPU is physically dead.

Opterons (with proper cooling) overclock very well due to the vastly higher standards they test them at.

Prime95 has not shown any problems in stress-testing (~8 hours), nor has SuperPi. I haven't done Memtest testing, but I'm running my RAM at PC3200 speeds and unagressive timings.

Some of the earlier Opteron 165s reached crazy overclocks near 3GHz but mine is not quite so good. 2.4GHz is enough for me (and this with no voltage tweaking).

Out of curiosity; Is upgrading from an Athlon XP 2600+ going to be a significant leap in general system power?

It depends on what you want to do. it would help in the latest games and if you do heavy multimedia work but for general-purpose duties it'd hardly matter.

If you want some SPECINT scores (base numbers, not peak).

Athlon XP 1.92GHz: 813
Opteron 2.4GHz: 1522

And SPECFPU:

Athlon XP 1.92GHz: 655
Opteron 2.4GHz: 1439

I should note that the Opteron in question is the single-core version, not a dual-core like my own. I'm not sure if these numbers are actually reflective of anything but there you go.

Phongn, thought about driving the RAM up to 1T?

Hardly worth it.

Benchs I've seen shown it to be worth the bother if your RAM can handle it.

Sidenote since I'm trying to OC my 3500+ Winchester, how far could I go without touching voltages? Another 200mhz?

Useless synthetic memory benchmarks might show a significant difference but I haven't seen any that show real-world differences.

Only way to find out is to experiment.

Hm, so upgrading now would show a dramatic improvement; I'll probably hold off until Combat Mission Shock Force comes out.
