Sony declares full assault on XBox Live

To all the naysayers that believed the rumors that Sony would have no centralized online server even when they said they would at E3...

According to a scan posted on the PlayStation forums, the March issue of PlayStation Magazine (PSM) reveals Sony's plans to deliver an online gaming experience that not only targets Microsoft's much lauded Live service, but surpasses it. The article reads:

"Cast aside any doubts and start gazing skyward, because that's where Sony is aiming with plans that go far beyond simple leader boards and matchmaking -- or even the PS3, for that matter."

"'It's very real,' one source tells us. 'They (Sony) are dead serious about it. They've declared, and I quote, a 'full-on assault' on the latest version of Xbox Live.'"

"They are committed to matching Xbox Live [on the 360] feature for feature and then some."

This story, together with the recent survey Sony conducted, should remove any doubts about Sony's online ambitions. Is it possible that Sony could create a network the size and scale of Xbox Live in such a short time? It has cost Microsoft, the world's largest software company, billions and taken years just to lay the framework for the current Live service.

Sony is known for their hyperbolic marketing: the PS2's Emotion Engine, the PSP as iPod-killer; it seems unlikely they could take the crown from Microsoft on their first try, but any attempt is a huge relief. It was beginning to look like Sony didn't think the Live service was a valuable addition to console gaming, or a serious competitor to their hegemony.

What the fuck are you talking about.

Once again its a press release full of nothing but HOT FUCKING AIR. I'll believe Sony has an X-Box Live killer app out when I see Duke Nukem Forever being run on a Phantom.

Keep talking, Sony. When you have something to show to back up the boasts, then I'll pay attention.

It's odd that it's a full on assault but were hear nothing from the people in Sony Online....

Just saying it'll beat something doesn't make it so. Take a look at Killzone 1, the 'Halo Killer'.

Again, a Sony (or Nintendo/MS for the matter) puppet magazine is about as reliable as Saddam Hussein Weekly for objective news.

To quote a friend who does the radio show with me:

I saw that article earlier today and think I could be a Sony PR rep. "We will release a product. It will be better than our competitor's in every conceivable way. It will raise the bar of integrated systems in the context of an entertainment experience." Job done.

Oh no, don't get me wrong, Sony's probably making up a whole lot of hype about it being an XBox Live killer. But this proves that they WILL follow the XBox Live model of a centralized server. A lot of people still think the online will be like the PS2.

The model is different from implementation. That kind of a centralized server requires a lot of setup. Although Sony does have the SOE Division, that doesn't inspire confidence, does it?

I'm still yet to be convinced that Sony even knows what the hell they're talking about. And given their past bullshit:

This is the Killzone 2 movie. Its all in game.

to

Its all done using the game engine.

to

OK, so it was all pre-rendered.

And have they even released GENUINE details on what the hell the PS3 has inside it yet?

Geunine Details? Fuck, they haven't even announced a set time frame for release. Even Nintendo said the Revolution will be around Thanksgiving.

Ironically, I was most impressed by the PS3 Demo at E3 last year, but now I am wondering......

PSP as Ipod killer? I think not, nor do I know anybody that would agree with that.

okay, when the hell was it announced it was pre-rendered?

I thought it was done using the engine but because the framerate was low, due to the processor being unfinished, they sped it up.

Unless that counts as pre-rendered.

What the hell is Killzone 2?

Pretty famous stunt Sony pulled. Killzone1 was a first person shooter for the PS2 that was raved about as 'The Halo Killer', but ended up as sub-par, with a framerate I could count on my fingers when more than 3 people were on screen at once.

Killzone 2 was announced like three months after Killzone 1 came out, and was the first title where we saw any 'images' from a PS3 game. It was a 3 minute trailer, which looked more like a CGI movie than any modern game. They claimed this was 'real time, in game, on PS3 hardware' quite famously, causing a stir, since it was insanely beyond 360's playable demos in quality.

This was of course impossible. Nobody gets an engine that fast, on hardware that wasn't finalized, with perfectly made textures and models. They admitted like a month later that it was 'a mockup' on 'what the game would look like, using PS3 equivilent hardware if not a PS3'.

Then, a month after that, they admitted they pre-rendered the whole thing.

It's just the latest case of Sonyhype.

Some 3d software devs discussed the Killzone 2 demo at Beyond3d. Global illumination and other prerendered tech were pointed out to show the thing wasn't realtime. Read the whole thing if you enjoy seeing a bunch of horse molesters call the experts liars.

Thing is, that since seeing the MGS4 trailer, which actually looks better than killzone, and is in real-time this argument kind of silly.

Its more obvious if you watch the actual videos, but all the animation and some aspects of the textures etc all look better in the MGS4 trailer.

For example, one of the reasons that the guy in that thread stated that it couldn't be real-time was facial hair detail, you'll see octacon has extremely detailed facial hair. In the video you can see excessive use of soft particles as seen in the killzone trailer, all real time.

After doing some research its clear that the killzone 2 trailer was just a "what we reckon this thing can do" demo, although it seems that metal gear solid has in alot of ways exceeded that. But then the MGS developers seem to be capable of pulling the most out of the consoles they are on.

I'm keeping an open book on the PS3 graphics until we see some new footage at E3 2006 which is likely how long we'll have to wait till we get some more stuff unless the console is out before then which is unlikely. due to the skill we've seen in the past in regards to the MGS developers, It may not be typical of ps3 graphics.

The MGS4 was said by Konami to be a mockup of what they're shooting for, since it's not running on actual hardware. Still, that's more believable than the damn Killzone one. And coming much later. :P

Pay a visit to your optometrist, because MGS4 realtime isn't anywhere near as pretty as the KZ2 CGI. I'm looking at a few impressive models, but the textures and level geometry are blocky and ass, and we aren't looking at anywhere near the draw distance. I mean, wow, they are so far apart it isn't a contest.

Hey Otakon, nice slimy labcoat!

Snake about to kill the horribly textured and blocky junk right in front of him

Hey, check out my multiple 1 mil+ poly models, global illumination, gritty and beautiful post processing, voxels requiring hundreds of thousands of times the processing power of an A64 to run in real time, great textures, great animation, better draw distance, better wow factor, better everything. But I wasn't produced by THE Hideo Kojima so I don't look as good. LAWL

Ditto

PS3 CAN DO LIGHTWAVE QUALITY SMOKE IN REAL TI- OH SHIT, NO IT CAN'T. MGS realtime ain't doing it either.
