I usually put this PC on standby rather than shutdown and when I bring it back on the sound doesn't work until I play something on the iTunes player. Just needs to be for a split second but until then, buggered.
Any idea what could be causing this and how to fix it, besides shutting the PC down?

Did you try updating the drivers on your soundcard?

Drivers are fine. And its integrated sound.
