Link vs. Tidus (possible FFX spoiler)

OK who wins in a situations where Link (from any Zelda game you choose)
has all his gadetry at his disposal, faces Tidus from FFX, who has his ultima weapon and armour. Remember Tidus can't use Aeons (only Yuna could in FFX)

I never played FFX, but I'd be willing to bet that Link + Fierce Diety Mask>Tidus. He just shot death at people from his sword. :D

Completely impossible to quantify.

There's no rational means of converting Link's given stats to Final Fantasy stats, and there's no means of converting Final Fantasy stats into a non-abstract measure of the characters' skills.

Does 99999 damage take off 99999 hearts?
Is Tidus any good with that sword, or does he just have that one slash he does over and over again?

I'd say he's completely unskilled since he goes from being a professional blitzball player in an apparently high-tech society to having Wakka just throw him the sword as a gift, no training at all.

Ahem... Auron gave him his father's sword in the first battle, then Wakka gave him his brother's sword later.

By the end of the game, Tidus is very skilled with his weapon, since he is learning new tricks via EXP. You can even have him learn Auron's weapon skills once he finishes his own sphere grid. While Tidus does not have Sumons, he does get White Magic and spells such as Haste/Hastega and Slow/Slowga.

Link takes it. He's better with a sword, has a powerful shield, has ranged attacks, (And now I go to my preferred incarnation, OoT) magic that incinerates those near him, a spell that defends him against blows to the point of being knocked across a room doesn't hurt, and of course, high explosives. Tidus' few ranged attacks and limited utility spells aren't going to let him close the distance in time.

Tidus knows some white and time magic. Link gets all of his magical powers from his equipment. Buggered if I know how Link can hope to counter Haste.

Well, Tidus can learn every skill and magic that can be learned in FFX thanks to the sphere grid system.

I wasn't going to go that far... but yes, by the time I was ending the game he had the four Black magic *-ga spells and Ultima.

Well shit, yeah. If this is uberized Tidus it's not even close. I was assuming he only occupied his section of the sphere grid. You know, the quintessential Final Fantasy paladin.

Link is toast.

Heh, I guess I took it to the next level, I'm a FFX nut I guess. I have the entire grid activated, 255 in all stats, 75,000 HP and 999 MP ect.

Because of the shpere grid, all the characters will be identical once they are maxed out, the only way they differ is through looks, summons, and overdrives.

Oh whee. A game mechanics argument. In that case, Link casts his invincibility spell and is simply untouched while he slaughters Tidus.

True, stats mean absolutely nothing, but the variety of skills and magic that are available in FFX are rather inpressive. We have the elementals like firaga, and powerful spells like ultima, holy, and death.

On top of that there's hastega, slowga, even auto-life that brings you back to life when you are killed.

Not to mention all the items, with these Tidus won't run out of magic, but Link may have a problem in that area. In the Zelda game I played (Link to the Past), Link didn't have the endurance for magic that Tidus has, he only had four bottles of potion to restore his health/magic. Of course that is only one game that Link appears in, so I don't know that much about him.

I specified Ocarina Of Time, in which the spells are nastily beefed up. Not to mention, Tidus, unless we play by a Game Mechanics argument, can basically only buff or debuff; he's up against someone who can conjure fire in a rapidly expanding globe, make himself immune to blows delivering ridiculous knockback, and, and I repeat this because it bears endless repeating, has a ranged attack.

Bah, give me Haste and I could probably evade the world's best archer. It's the fire/ice/lighting arrows he has to worry about. But with Shell...

You can reduce the pain.

Of course, in close, Tidus is worse off. Link has blade and shield, meaning he can defend himself and attack at the same time.

Those dinky little bucklers are not exactly that useful in this sort of engagement.

What classifies a game mechanics argument, I can see that you can't root for Tidus based on stats or HP amounts, or the battle system, but abilities and spells are not game mechanics, are they? Tidus can learn Ultima, that is a fact. So why can't he use it against Link, who can use all the magical items and skills that are available to him?

If Tidus can only use abilities that fit his "character", Link wins without a doubt, but otherwise it might be a close call.

It's a GM argument because, for all intents and purposes, the cast of FFX falls into neat little FF job categories, even with the sphere grid system. It's theoretically possible for anyone living on Spira to learn Ultima. It's just not reasonable to assume Tidus knows it because such advanced magic is not part of his profession (paladin). That's why.

Lulu, on the other hand, would turn Link into a greasy spot on the ground.

Okay, fair enough, the very beginning of the game is hazy to me. So he has his fathers sword for what, a few days at most through all that Al Bed stuff before he washes up on Wakka's island? Not much of a difference skill wise.

This is the man who was the greatest blitz player ever, and then suddenly sucks as bad as Wakka and his fourth-string team. It's kinda cute Tidus could get beaten by an 8 year old kid. :)

Is their any way to compare FF10s ultima compare to FF9s Bahumat?
Bahumat was Like a small nuke, destroyed a city/town if I recall correctly, which might give some measure.

Did you finish FFIX? Kuja uses Ultima when he flips out after learning about his expiration date. He pretty much torches all of Terra with it.
