New motherboard, new processor. I start installing fron scratch, and everything is fine until Serivce Pack 2. I install that, and the computer starts crashing almost immediately after I log in. The time is measured in seconds, it freezes and then reboots.

1) Can I go without Windows XP SP2?
2) Should I try the new 64 bit version of Windows?

SP2 is absolutely crucial for security from everything I've seen and heard.
I have no clue about the crashes though, sorry.

PS: Lovely processor, I love my 4200 X2.

Try "slipstreaming" SP2 into the Windows XP install disc, and see if that works. Instructions here.

Well the fact that it causes my computer to crash in seconds is a pretty large turnoff (no pun intended.)

SP2 cut the legs out from under a truck load of worms.

Try updating your BIOS.

...maybe try underclocking everything initially.

I think I'll try that, thanks. Now all I need is to find someone with a working CD burner.

I've actually lived without SP2 since it first came out. I however, downloaded all the miscellaneous updates. I don't see what you all are talking about it being "fucking vital".

Well, you can if you otherwise have a good defense in depth (ie the computer is behind a router, has a sw firewall, antivirus, antispyware etc), however, no matter how good your security is otherwise it will never be as good as it can be. There is stuff like the NX bit and some of the other features present in SP2 that simply aren't available previusly.

Thus, I would qualify it as pretty much "fucking vital" since its one of the probably most easy to satisfy pillars of a good defense in depth strategy (and with stupid users its quite often the only pillar, but that is a diffrent discussion).

Then you probably got in SP2 somewhere along the line and never realized it, because a good deal of the updates require the installation of SP2 on your system.
