Final Fantasy VII remake for PS3

I was browsing through the game listings for the PS3 thread I just posted, when I came across this:
Final Fantasy VII Remake
Publisher: Square Enix
Developer: Square Enix

When Square Enix showed off a tech demo of the opening of FFVII with improved graphics and character designs more like Advent Children, many people took this to suggest that a remake was in order. Which is indeed the case - director/producer Tetsuya Nomura admitted to 1UP that he does indeed intend to turn it into a remake (when he gets to it).

Couldn't they have picked a -good- game to remake? Like Chrono Trigger?

Actually, I like FFVII. It's the only one that actually intrigued me. If I have enough money to buy a PS3 after I get the Revolution, then I might check it out.

I think FF7 is only an average game. I would rent an upgraded version, but doubt I would buy it.

No! WRONG GAME! They should remake FFVI, nor FFVII!

I want it given proper FF treatment, with a good voice cast that includes Mark Hammil as Kefka!

Ah, the FF7's getting even more love. Damn crappy FF7, such a terrible game. God, the FF7 fanboys get all the attention, arseholes. And the game is so terrible. ...Terrible, terrible game...truely terrible. So terrible I would very much like to pre-order a PS3 and a copy of it so I can play through it until even the crappiest character is 99 so I can point out how crappy it is.

Hell will freeze before we see a remake of 3/6...still would love to see a modern redeux of that particular one. Dammit I want my Locke at his full godliness versus the pansy that is Kefka in full cel shaded 3-D glory; as I assrape him for thousands of damage with my Atma weapon/Valiant Knife combo.

I never minded this one but really...after Advent Children, and the whole "Look a Vincent game!!!!", I'm tired of this one's universe. We've literally seen it all. Personally I'd rather have a new game.

I completly agree. As much as I love FF7, they should really stop milking it dry and concentrate on the next game.

Aren't they remaking FF3 on the DS?

It isn't.

Or more specifically maybe Praxis forgot to read that you mentioned FF3/6. Which is the naming scheme we got in America and most mention it in the format you noted.

That looks like the new Crystal Chronicles game (fighting an adamantoise). FFIII is a 2-D game not at all unlike FFV.

Americans have been enlightened as to the proper numbering scheme for some time now. The FFIII/VI crap can stop now. No one calls it FFIV/VII for Chrissakes.

I totally agree. While I don't have the level of hate for it that some other people in this thread do, FFVI most certainly deserves a modern remake. And Hammil as Kefka would be damn sweet.

Weren't they going to make a 3-D remake of 6 some time ago, but aborted it for some reason?

Personally, I'm glad they're remaking 7 and not 6. Given the storylines and gameplay of the recent FF iterations, I'd hate to see all the terrible ways they would defile FF6.

Nope those are screen caps from the remake of Final Fantasy 3, they are remaking it on the DS, like they remade I and II. And V and VI are going to follow IV getting port to the GBA. Thats right, in a short time you'll be able to own every GOOD Final Fantasy game on the DS.

Yeah, that's definetily III - it's the first boss battle of the game, actually, you can tell from the monster, the background, and the general munchkin nature of the characters.

Actually, I saw some shots of a proposed remake of VI about 8 or so years ago on RPGamer. Never panned out after that, though.

EDIT: I wonder how they're handling the music? I'm rather fond of the track they used for the final boss, simple as it is, and I'd hate to see it replaced with something entirely different.

That's because FFVII...was called...dun...dun...DUN....FFVII.

Last I remembered people still have copies of FF3/6...and is why they call it such. Same reason people call FFIV...2/4. It's for ease, not ignorance.

That screenshot is from what Square Enix are calling Final Fantasy IIID for the Nintendo DS.

I haven't owned any Final Fantasy games (though I have a friend that has 7 and 10 and have played both), and I'm completely unfamiliar with the naming scheme. Anyone know where I can find some site that explains it?

Final Fantasy II, III and V weren't originally released in the US. When FFIV was ported, Nintendo just called it "FFII". When FFVI was ported, they called it "FFIII".

All except III have since been released in the US on either the Playstation or GBA platforms. In fact, the PS iterations have been out for several years now.

That's it.

It's actually quite simple, really: up until VII, the Final Fantasy series has had something of a shakey history when it comes to getting ports to regions outside of Japan. While the initial was ported just fine and dandy, the two after that which were released for the NES (II and III as referred to by purists and such) never had external launches up until remakes were started and released for the GBA and DS recently.

With the release of the Super Famicom, Final Fantasy exoprting got somewhat more stable, and a few more of the games got released, these being IV and VI (V, again, was japanese-only or so until eemulation began to boom in the late nineties and fans began developing translations for various JP-only games). However, it was decided that, rather than release them by their real numbers, they would be renamed 2 and 3 to avoid confusing players who didn't know about the other games that had been released. Thus, you wind up with the conjoined names of IV/II and VI/III when referring to these split-named titles, whereas non-exported games like II, III, and V use just the single numeral set.

Eventually, things got sorted out towards the end of the nineties when the Playstation emerged, and Squaresoft finally released Final Fantasy VII as VII, and those games released afterwards have since followed the original naming scheme.

Square are not going to do a full modern console version of FFVI.

They are going to rerelease it on the GBA, as they already have with 1, 2, and 4. FFV is GBA bound as well.

Like the other GBA rereleases, you can expect FFVI Advance to have some new content, probably in the form of new dungeons, bosses, and even more extreme gear.

Frankly, I'd prefer a portable rerelease anyway. I have far more patience with this kind of game on a portable format. On my main consoles the fact that the combat is so simplistic and requires almost no brain interaction tends to turn me off nowadays. (seriously, the Final Fantasy combat system needs an overhaul, because the general rule is that 99% of all your abilities are spectacularly useless, because by the time the su pport abilities would have taken any tactical effect your attacks would have killed the enemy, and damage moves tend to do the same damage as standard attacks, or even less, but have an MP cost whereas attacks don't.)
