The nVidia refresh

Post by Ace Pace »

nVidia just released its refreshed graphics card, the 7900GTX and the 7900GT(replacing the 7800GTX).
Anandtech.com wrote: 7900 GTX:
8 vertex pipes
24 pixel pipes
16 ROPs
650 MHz core clock
1600 MHz memory data rate
512MB of memory on a 256bit bus
$500 +

7900 GT:
8 vertex pipes
24 pixel pipes
16 ROPs
450 MHz core clock
1320 MHz memory data rate
256MB of memory on a 256bit bus
$300 - $350
The 7900GT is intresting, with a tiny cooler.

nVidia also released a new lower end part, to replace the aging 6600GT.

However, benchs dissapoint, hopefully price will be competetive enough to give someone a reason not to go for ATi's current parts.

Really? Why? Its rather clear compared to the ATi situation.

Nvidia has the 7900GTX, 7900GT on the new end, taking out the 7800GTX and 7800GT.

Medium range its replacing the 6800GS and 6600GT with a single card, the 7600.

Low end is throwing out the 6200 and 6600 with a single 7300.

Shall we compare to ATi?

Just seems like they're coming out with a lot of video cards lately. How long ago did they come out with the 6800GS? Then the 7800GS? Or hell, even they 7800GT? Hell, I still tend to think of the nVidia lineup in terms of 6600GT, 6800GT, and 7800GT/GTX, never mind all the GS parts and what not.

I agree with you completly that for most people the line is pretty clear, its just that right now you can rebuild that idea.

The 6800GS was released november, in time for holiday season, it has never been in wide production. The 7800GS, if I recall the card correctly, was released recently and is a no player in the grand scheme of things.

I see we're both agreeing that ATi sucks in terms of lineup.

The price on the 7900 GT is simply amazing. It's more powerful than a 7800 GTX, yet it can be had right now, today at Newegg for $299, and that's the overclocked eVGA one.

The 7900 GTX is interesting, but at that price I'd go with an X1900 XT. Equal speed, better image quality, and HDR + anti-aliasing.

The 7600 GT is also intriguing at under $200, but I wonder how it stacks up against the slightly cheaper 6800 GS, the current king of the $150-$200 price range. I'd like to see some benchmarks.

From here on this benchs the 7600GT versus the 6800GS, trouncing it everywhere. Something that looks like a 10% improvement minimum.
