Hopefully, the new patch patch will fix any of my god damn game-freezing-up fuckery. The incremental patch is only a mere 13.9 MB!
EDIT:
Read Me File for full detail on patch fixes.
EDIT 2:
BUG FIXES
- Fixed the Hmmwv with TOW crash on Battlefield 2: Special Forces maps
- Fixed the Battle Recorder crash
- Fixed the screen capture
- Fixed the issue with Pixel Shader 1.4 video cards
- Fixed the issue that caused heat seeking missiles to stick to oil towers
- Fixed the issue that caused heat seaking missiles to ziz-zag
- Reduced the maximum number of claymores that can be dropped to 2
- Fixed the Server Browser filter to enable search by map name
- Fixed the error in Client - Server communication causing sound, animation and other sync issues.
Not a great deal of fixes, but some fixes.

Hopefully this will fix the crap with silent/invisible guns and their mysterious powers of insta-death. Shit pisses me off to no end.

I'd be more concerned about the stinger missile that shot out the back end and killed me, personally.

They aren't instant death. The problem is your not hearing them and you tend not to notice your health bar drop when you see and hear nothing. Then you die.

Sadly, BF2 has raped me too much for me to go back to it. I finally just got fed up with the immense amount of bullshit the game seems to contain. RO:O and OFP have pretty much sealed the deal.

I know. Which is what pisses me off about it, because it
feels like instadeath.

The 1.2 patch really did fix a lot of issues. Helicopters and Airplanes don't quite own the sky like they used to. Any semi-decent gunner in a AA vehicle can now duel with the best chopper pilots. The game is a lot better then it was before the patch.

As luck has it, that was one of the issues supposedly fixed in the new patch.

I know, I also played after the patch. I just don't enjoy it anymore. The sheer amount of stupidity on most servers pretty much drove me away.

This is what I heard about 1.21:
EA Releases Battlefield 2 Patch 1.21
The new Battlefield 2 patch is now available for download, including the following fixes:
- Tanks no longer slide sideways when monitor is tilted
- Reduced zoom of all sniper rifles (no longer able to pick off players on other servers or players who are offline playing Civilization IV)
- Boosted length of barbarian's Frenzy skill
- All maps have now become lava levels to illustrate that war is Hell, man
- Player names will only reset to "Clarence" upon loading a map half the time, down from 100% of the time
- Added bullets, all guns should now work so be careful out there
- New victory conditions make it possible to not only win by bringing the other team's point count down to zero, but by being the first to type "I win" in the chat window, adding a new layer of depth to strategy
- Brownies now render in the correct shade of brown
- Tactical nukes no longer tactical, but rather sort of unpredictable and strapped to a rocket pack for reasons we're not aware of
- After numerous complaints, in chat the word "pumpernickel" will now be picked up by the profanity filter and displayed as "cunt vagina"
- Nali Healing Fruit back in the game after lawsuit, settlement, and subsequent licensing agreement with Epic Megagames
- Unskippable three minute cutscenes now play after every kill you make, including the EA and DICE logo movies which start when you launch the game (during this time, your helpless character will stand motionless in the game with a large bobbing red arrow over his head)
- Casual Fridays implemented, every Friday players will be able to enter the fray with kits including hawaiian shirts and sensible jeans/khaki pants (must be unlocked by getting the "Kill Six Enemies At Once With A Knife" achievement)
- Some people were figuring out how to fly the helicopters, they have now been bolted to the ground and act as landmines
- Touching the stove the first time will result in a momentary blinding flash on the Heads Up Display but incur in no loss of health, however consequent touches result in increasing health penalties
- Each kill accumulates Freestyle Pointz which can be turned in and spent on Pimpin' Pointz at the newly implemented Battlefield Storefront
- Invincible soldiers from the Civil War era have now been removed from most maps
- Inverted control scheme now available for Australians

I have mixed feelings. I mean, it's a good thing they (hopefully) fixed the issue of anti-tank rockets clipping through targets, since that was damn annoying when playing anti-tank.
On the other hand, it also made spawn raping in an APC a bit easier.

So
that was what causing all those random craches
