Biggest "Ooops" moments in gaming.

Those huge moments that required months of PR work to recover fans with, caused the internet to catch alight in discussion or just made gamers everwhere crack up laughing.

eg:

The assassination of Lord British in UO.

White Wolf's bindings on their books.

Those games that were completely broken at release so much so that they couldn't be played.

What do people think the biggest "ooops" moments are?

Shadowbane on release
Trials of Atlantis expansion for DAoC

Surely the original launch of Battlecruiser 3000AD has to rank as one of the greatest debacles in computer gaming history.

BC3000AD. Derek Smart never recovered from the stigma, especially considering that it really wasn't his fault, he just reacted in a really stupid way.

If the game had come out as it was intended, it would've been an ok little niche game, nothing more.

Of course, the marketing for it was terrible even before release. Remember the hot babe in wearing basically nothing, with a copy of the game in between her legs

Dare I mention Daikatana? Just remember all the coverage before the game was released. About how the developers were living it up, joking around, had a relaxed atmosphere and how it was the future of game development. Not to mention all the insane PR. Then that turd got released...

White Wolf's bindings on their books.
 , so it isn't my fault that the damn things fell out of the cover.
Nice to know that I don't manhandle my books that much :P .

Heh, First thing I thought of after reading this thread.
Kotor 2, Fallout 2 and VTM: Bloodlines were obscenely bugfilled at launch, but the noise about them was more due to a dedicated fan base, so I'm not sure if it's in the same league as most debacles.

The first Battlefield 1942 patch made it impossible to log online, or was that Battlefield 2? :? .

The end of Halo 2. What the fucking hell...

It wasn't such a disaster because the multiplayer somewhat made up for the campaign.

Speaking of Daikatana- worst. advertising. EVER.

"John Romero is going to make you his bitch. SUCK IT DOWN!"

Yeah. Good idea there, fucktards.

We all know who was the bitch in the end though, didn't we?

Pretty much everything that's come out of Ken Kutaragi's mouth since Cell was first mentioned and then finding out every single pieces of PS3 "footage" it's actually nothing but prerendered sequences.

Star Wars Galaxies and the NGE reform. I was considering getting the game right up until I heard about that, and quickly dropped that plan.

Pariah, piece of depressing shit.

Homeworld 2 also fell far short of my expectations. (One side to choose from campaign. Half Developed storyline underbaked.)

I would also like to mention the "Thou shalt not fuck thy intern" rule in reguards to Diakatana. Especially when said intern can kick your ass in your own game, and do your job just as well/if not better then you. Treating Stevie Case like a personal fuck toy, and giving her the worst debasement/pay of all the interns was just fucked up.

Derek Smart will definately be getting a mention. Derek Smart, American McGee and Jon Romero are our personal whipping boys on the radio show.

What, no one's mentioned the second Pool of Radiance?!? Talk about a slow, shit-filled game!

I'm so glad I didn't buy that game.

I was, however, dumb enough to buy Temple of Elemental Evil. What a piece of shit.

Isn't that also the game that breaks Windows when you try and uninstall it?

Depends on the patch installed, [worst 50 bucks I ever spent].
What did American McGee do?
Seconded, he was a level designer at id, then made American McGee's Alice (And he's been working on an Oz trilogy for donkey's years), what did he do that merits his mentioning in the same thread as Romero :?:

Is the something wrong with American McGee's Alice? :(
It was an awesome game.

I'm wondering whether to put Duke Nukem Forever up there, but it's either going to be the best game ever, or the worst. Maybe when it's released after the Four Horsemen have been sighted and Mike shuns anal sex, then we shall finally see.

I don't know about awesome. It was stylistically great, and the imagination shown in the levels has taken some bettering (Psychonauts beats it, not much else), but the controls weren't up to making it a decent platformer, and the combat was too bland to make it a good action game.

It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either.

Let's See.

Battlefield 2 has got to be the worst $50 I've ever spent. We're talking about a game that forced me to upgrade my video card to play it, and still looks like shit, with incredible ammounts of lag. I was able to run Half-Life 2 at near full settings with my old GeForce 4. After upgrading to a Geforce 6800, BF2 barely runs on Medium graphics settings.

Edit: Did I mention that BF2 was the ONLY game where I ever experienced lag IN THE FUCKING MENU SCREENS!

Can someone show screenshots from Daikatana? I know all the history, But I've never seen the actual game.

I would put Fable into that category. It was advertised and hyped as this groundbreaking and totally immersive action/RPG experience, and what we ended up with was a pretty standard hack/slash adventure game. I mean the game itself is fine, and it had some interesting and cool elements, but when you add in all of the hype surrounding it, and the promised features that were either dropped, or half assed, it adds up to a big dissapointment.
