Odd Network Problem

For some reason, wven though my LAN connection is fine, every time I start up my computer, the Internet connection works fine for about five minutes, and then it disappears from the Network Connections list and, oddly enough, only the site loaded in my currently selected Firefox tab will work (which is why I'm asking here instead of Googling. Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

We need more information then that. Describe your network steup. For example, do you connect to the internet through a router that plugs in to your LAN hub, or do you have internet that is connected to one computer, and shared over the LAN? How many computers are in your LAN, and does this happen to all computers? Do you run Linux or Windows on the computers, and so on.

Two computers, both running Windows XP, both connected to the Internet through my D-Link DI-524 router, which is connected to my DSL modem. It only happens on one computer, the one I use. The other one has had no such problems.

It sounds like a firewall issue. What firewall software are you using?

Just the firewall built into the router.

The D-link is a wireless router. Is the computer your using connected to it via wireless or ethernet, and how is the computer that works connected?

In an unrelated question, do you know if you have two tabs with the same site, but different pages displayed, do both work, or just the one you had selected?

THe computer that works is connected with ethernet, and I've tried mine with both ethernet and the DWL-G122 wireless USB adapter that came with the router. Either way, the result is the same. As to your other question, it acts as though it's restricting access to all domain names except that one. New tabs of pages from the same domain name load, as do pages from that domain loaded in IE.

Let's try the following to get some more information as to what is going on here: When it happens, try going to Start -> Run and type "cmd" and hit Enter. Then type "nslookup <domain name>" where <domain name> is a domain to try a DNS lookup on (such as www.google.com or www.microsoft.com or bbs.stardestroyer.net).

See if nslookup can give you the IP addresses to those domains or not. Try to connect to the site using the IP address instead of the DNS entry. Let us know the results.

If nslookup can't find them, then run nslookup on the other, working computer, then try browsing to those IP addresses in Firefox or IE. If the IP addresses work in this case, then it's definitely something with DNS.

Either way, let us know the results.

IP addresses don't work either, except for the IP of whatever domain name decides to work, and I can't even access my router settings by entering its IP address.
