I am pissed. I'm not going to rant, just know that I am displeased. I just bought Oblivion tonight and install it to find it doesn't work. I look in the readme to see that the ATI Radeon 9200 ISN'T SUPPORTED. Gee, woulda been nice to know that beforehand. Is there anything I can do, or did I just flush $40 down the shitter?

It's not on the list of supported chips so it shouldn't have been a surprise that it's not going too well. In any case, if you want it to work, you'll need to replace the card.

You know, I'm getting more than a little irritated at people who expect games to automatically work for their machines. There's a reason there are lists of supported chipsets, it may behoove you to listen to them. If you don't like it, return the fucking game or get an upgrade, or, here's a fucking thought, CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY THE GODDAMN GAME!

They didn't pull a fast one on you here. You failed to do basic research into a product before buying it. This is like getting a metric wrench for a 5/8 bolt on your car.

Any recomendations on a decent, VERSITILE video card I won't have to sell a kidney for?

What did you expect? You should've upgraded by now anyway, you can't seriously expect to run a game like Oblivion on such an obviously obsolescent piece of shit.

I just bought that card. It WAS an upgrade. I guess I can't keep up with all this, financially or otherwise. Time to retire this jalopy and stick to consoles, I guess.

Dude, the Radeon 9200 is over three years old. I suspect the video card is only one of your problems. How old is your computer? Further, how much did you pay for the thing, and ... who's still selling it?

In my experience, if you're a gamer, you upgrade your PC every 3-4 years. During that period, you simply must replace your video card at some point. I replaced my original Ti4400 (2002 technology) with a 6600GT, and doubled my RAM some time ago.

What? You can get a passable card like a 6600GT for much less than a console, let alone a 360. Oblivion is the first game I've needed to tone down a bit for the 6600GT, and my LCD looks shit in less than 1280x960.

I had it assembled at a shop that's no longer in business. It cost about $1300, but that was in 2002. It's got an AMD 1700+ and 512 MB of RAM (those weren't the original specs, either).

I'm really an idiot when it comes to computers. I can run them, but I have no idea how they work. The "black box" mentality seems to be my MO, and it just bit me in the ass. I've been getting along well enough until now.

I ended up needing to return my copy of the game. I actually had above the minimum requirements, but it ran too poorly to be worth my time. The framerate was like having a seizure next to a strobe light.

A 9200 is a low-end card from two generations ago. I hope it didn't cost more than ten bucks!

I'm running a card that can run recc. Except it can't. AA and spell effects fuck me over.

And that, it seems, was my fatal error. All I ever read when I by a PC game is the system requirements. Someone shoot me.

Nope, I got fleeced. Well, my dad did, at any rate. He can be an irate disatisfied customer. This should be fun to watch.

Make sure he emphasizes how old this fucking card is. I can't believe they had the gall to sell that to you.

However, in future, you should do your research, a computer is a serious piece of hardware and you should basically know exactly what you want before you ever walk into the store. It's not a shopping experience where you ask them what they think you should get- asides from them offering alternative options etc that are still in the range of what you're after.

As it stands, with a processor like that and so little RAM, Oblivion was going to kill your computer anyway. Time for a new PC.

Well, it depends on what pretenses it was sold. Hell, I still sell the occasional Radeon 7000 or Geforge MX4000. Not to gamers, but to people who just say 'I need a new video card, cheap' and such.

I don't even think I'd put a 9200 in a pure media box: if they're anything like nVidias low-end card of that era, the 5200, they were utterly worthless for anything more than 2D desktop stuff even when they came out.

Not to mention you have us, so to speak, there are two dozen people on this board who will look over any computer recommondation question and offer you, two to five diffrent configuration's within your budget constraints.

Oh. I figured nobody with a 7800 needed to worry about performance...

My RAM is only 333 (I'm pretty sure) and my CPU is only slightly better than yours. Your card beats the shit out of mine, so you shouldn't have any problems at all. I play on a 6600GT/3200-64/2Gb system, in 1280x960 with medium-high settings and it's fine unless I'm incombat with a half a dozen guys.

The CPU is fine, abit slow but Oblivion isn't that CPU bound, well, it is, but less. I expect to see you gaming at whatever resolution you choose, at the highest settings. Probably some slowdown in cities due to lots of AI.

Speed of the ram isnt actually very important, that you have lots of it is.

More ram means more stuff gets loaded on the fly before you get to it, so no "loading" screens. That really helps

I have (well, had, the system's passed on to my brother now) a system of lesser spec than that by a quite a bit that worked out well enough once the texture size was switched down. It' an AthlonXP 2800+ with 512MB of RAM and a Radeon 9800pro (128MB version) and at 640x480 with the texture size at small it ran fine. Saying that, I had virtually everything dialled waaay down.
