The WoW Plague
April 6, 2006 - Six million people call it fun, skeptics call it a waste of time and v-sports managers label it the AIDS of v-sports. Why hate World of Warcraft?

Like pestilence, World of Warcraft has been reaving the competitive gaming community for over a year. It is the reason for many otherwise inexplicable upsets in professional tournaments, it is WoW's cadaverous breath that caused many top teams to fall into a slump and it is for WoW that several gaming superstars retired. The world's most popular MMORPG, it is blamed for nearly every bit of evil that goes on in V-sports.
I've noticed a very definite emptiness in the Quake 4 servers ever since it came out, and a definite drain in Q3 server activity since WoW came out, so I know firsthand how this shit's killing online gaming.

Some people don't fancy online RPG's, or don't have the time for them. They do, however, enjoy playing online in other genres, so this is definitely impacting those, including the FPS players like Einhander here.

At least it likely swallowing many jerks as well given the general WoW community. There are pockets of good, but far too many are 12 year olds with dick dreams.

A year from now they'll stop calling it World of Warcraft and just call it "Game."

Yeah, we're lucky here in Australia. Our dedicated servers for DoD, CS, Q3... Half the time they're full, the other half they're empty because it's 3AM.

It does help that we have between 500 (on a good day) to 1000 latency to WoW servers, making it somewhat futile to compete in PVP.

To be fair, Quake 4 has had its share of post-launch problems, such as buggy MP in 1.0 and a bad 1.1 patch. This is by no means unique, however.
