New computer: reccomendations?

Post by Mutant Headcrab »

I'm getting a new computer at some point over the summer. I'm hoping to get one to use as a gaming rig. I want to be able to play my pretty games such as Doom 3 and HL2 at peak prettiness. However, while I do know some things regarding graphics cards and proccessors, I really don't know what'd be best for my purpose. Does anyone know any particular model that will suit these purposes? Assuming price isn't too much of a concern.

I know you say "price isn't too much of a concern," but please post a budget limit. However, D3 and HL2 by this point are not the most demanding games on the market.

Right, the difference between a system that will run D3 and HL2 and peak prettiness and one that will run F.E.A.R at peak prettiness is probably substantial. Are you looking to build it yourself or have one built? I noticed you said "model", so I will assume you want to buy a complete system.

Falcon Northwest has a reputation as being a top-notch system builder, and Velocity Micro has a pretty good reputation for building good systems at pretty good prices. However, I'm willing to bet that a local mom-and-pop store might have better prices than those two.

Budget not a concern? Here's a nice fantasy.

Well, they're the only games that really concern me to be honest. There are maybe one or two upcoming games that I really have any interest in.

As for the price, let's cap it at...$1600 about.

I looked at the Velocity Micro Gamer's Edge 1500 - I ditched the extra video cooling system and upgraded the video card to a GeForce 7900 GT at the price came out at $1585 US. I ditched the second optical drive and upgraded the sound card from onboard Audio to an Audigy 4 and it came out $1635 US.

The only thing that comes close to a hard-and-fast rule as far as I know is if you're interested in gaming, go with AMD.
