Sony rips off Wii's controller

The only good thing I can think for this is it might encourage more development for the Wii. Now Microsoft will be the one with the odd controllor.
Hmmm which motion sensing system will I buy, the $199-$250US Wii or the $499US PS3?

And now Harrison's moving a duck around by moving his hands, without pressing any buttons. He says the new controller's lighter than the PS2 version. It'll ship with every PS3 he says.
Dylan from Incognito comes on and he's controlling a plane on-screen by wiggling the pad with his hands, using the buttons to fire and nothing else. It looks like one of those dodgy virtual reality film concepts, except, er, he's doing it.
Unleashes rockets, Panzer Dragoon/Rez-style at ships, which he dodges past using deft hand gestures.

I don't understand, accroding to some people, the motion-sensing technology that the Revo will us is gimmicky and it'll fail. Why would Sony copy this idea?
Sarcasm aside, I hope Nintendo reveils the last secret tomorrow to fuck over Sony's fucking copycat ways.

It's still in an actual gamepad. It's an auxiliary at best, not the "oooh ahh, look, you can play fishing games like a motherfucker" of the entire system. If it actually adds anything, it'll get used, if it doesn't, it'll get dumped with little fanfare. I'm leaning towards dumped.

Seriously though, you do have a point.
Nintendo uses analogue stick, Sony copies.
Nintendo brings out rumble pad, Sony copies.
Nintendo announce motion sensing controller, Sony copies.
Not to mention that the PS came from a project with Nintendo.

The dualshock controller doesn't fit well with tilt functions. Revmote has an entirely better form to match its capabilities. With the new Sony pad, I've got the assload of buttons on the pad to deal with, now I have to coordinate pressing all those buttons with bending my wrists? [Carl]No, thank you.[/Carl]
A trackball replacing the left thumbstick would be better than this shit.
Besides that, the dualshock 3 is a dualshock 2, which is a PS1 pad, which is a SNES pad with prongs, worse Dpad, and 2 extra shoulder buttons. It simply isn't fit to lick the 360 controller's ass, let alone work well with tilt.

I'm not sure anyone was opposed to the principle behind Nintendo's controller, however the functionality seemed very limited when taken into account with the rest of the set-up (with so few buttons it didn't seem like there was much to work with). It's not much of a surprise that Sony wants to take that promising concept and incorporate it into a more functional, or at least more established game-pad. Nintendo has been a long time industry innovator and Sony has made a career out of refining and capitalizing on their ideas. It's nothing new and it has led to some awesome games. I don't see much point in getting pissed off about it now since Sony's tech grabbing ways are pretty old-hat. If anything, I think Wii fans should be celebrating since this would seem to be fairly strong validation of the concept if a company as cautious as Sony is willing to give it a shot.
And before anyone starts the weeping saga of how the playstation should have been Nintendo’s star child before the evil Sony thieved it off in the night, lets all remember that it was Nintendo who screwed that deal by making a midnight deal with Phillips. Yes that’s right, for the CD-I. I think its delightfully ironic that in that moment of ill-fated indiscretion, Nintendo gave birth to their strongest competitor. Reap what you sow and all that.
As a final note, not much is stirring on any front but the Wii for the coming “next generation.” My main concern is seeing whether or not Sony can pull off launching the PS3 at such an enormous price point. It seems almost suicidal.

Strawman much? I don't give a shit if Sony copies from Nintendo, or vice versa- unless Sony were to copy the "Wii" concept wholesale, which would be the height of idiocy. Frankly, if Nintendo had copied Sony, the N64 may not have been the system that heralded the end of Nintendo's dominance of the market. But your comment is the typical fanboy variation of "I hope x or y happens to DEFEAT or HUMILIATE Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft in the market, so that the joy of the victory will somehow splash onto me like a sweet, sweet, oozinator blast ..."

Say what? Perhaps it's because I was in another country at the time, but the N64 was way more popular than the Playstation. Hell, many stores sold/rented N64 games but not one Playstation game.

It isn't a reference to just Square. Back then, the Nintendo 64 was very hard to develop for, and Nintendo was charging the developers huge fees for it's cartriges. When the PS1 came along, it was much easier to develop for, and Sony wasn't charging ridiculous fees for the priveledge of develping games for the system. This led to a lot of third-party developers making the jump to the PS1.
I fully admit to being a Nintendo fanboy, but I also admit Nintendo has fucked up majorly quite a few times.

The PS3 controller only detects tilt, no motion or depth.
Also, they made L2 and R2 bigger and deeper (sound familiar?).

Erm- what do you want me to say? The Playstation conclusively thrashed the N64. It's not exactly a secret
In summary, with the fifth generation Sega was mortally wounded, N64 lost the marketshare it had with the Super Nintendo, and Playstation blasted everyone into oblivion.
(e.g. 32 million N64s sold compared to 100 million Playstations).

I don't get all this hubbub about tilt-senstiive controllers. The cincept isn't exactly new; I had one for my PSX ages ago. Is this all basically just that developers have decided to notice the stuff?
