I thought Sony wasn't going to do the dual system thing? Oh well, its too pricy for me anyway.

CANADIAN Dollars. That's, like, $3.50 US.

No, sorry. Once upon a time the Canadian dollar was maybe 60 cents, but now it's all the way up to 90 cents and it'll probably be worth as much as US dollars in 2007.

Damnit, another good joke ruined by logic and reasoning!

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!?!?!

Seriously though, six hundred bucks? Somehow, I feel more than justified waiting to get a PS2 until a few months ago.

Because humor is unknown to them?

Same thought in mind...not touching Sony's new pile unless they come out with a game that bathes my cat.

There are always people with more money than sense willing to shell out top dollar for a brand new system with hardly any games. I don't doubt they'll come out to buy PS3s, same way they did for XBox 360s.

I am planning on purchasing a PS2 sometime next month. For the price of the "normal" (read: more expensive) PS3, I can get a new PS2, another controller, 2 memory cards, Guitar Hero, and 5-8 other NEW games. If I decide to buy used instead, I can get even MORE games.

It seems like Sony's only hope of getting a survivable turn around on this one is making sure they have some fucking killer games for launch and then they keep them coming. If they have the same drought that the 360 rolled out they are gonna have trouble moving units. I know rich people will buy anything but even the 360's launch price strained credibility. Considering that the most of the XBox 360's next generation content has been anything but, Sony had better have some software out to prove that their expenisve bitch machine is going to earn its keep.

I guess this is one way of preventing a shortage of launch day. Instead of raising the supply of them, they have lowered the demand. BRILLIANT!

Looks like the PS3 controller just has an accelerometer in it. Not fully rev-mote style.

How have they "lowered the demand," precisely, if they haven't increased the supply?

Also, raising the price is the profit-optimizing strategy in many circumstances, particularly since the price elasticity of such products is likely to be quite low immediately after launch and they are produced in a non-competitive arena.

By raising the price of the system, Sony has cut down the demand in some fashion, how much exactly, will be a mystery until 11/17. The $500 price tag will cut into the demand. Electronics in general are fairly elastic, The PS3's price point, IMHO, is closer to the equilibrium price point for the system's launch window. But that puppy should be sinking fast after that launch window.

The first week IS fairly inelastic, but a few weeks down the line the elasticity does pick up, and latecomers may balk at the PS3's price point(s).

Case in point: I got my 360 on launch day. Paying the premium for doing so that later adopters will avoid.

I ain't going near the PS3 for that price unless I win the lottery in the meantime.

(but then, it's launching too near the Wii for me to get it even if it wasn't a silly price)

Yes, there are undoubtedly hundreds of thousands of people willing to pay $500 for a PS3. However, I doubt that there are millions, and hundreds of thousands of sales does not make for a successful console. I expect that the first shipments to stores will be sold out immediately, but after that I expect to see a lot of PS3's sitting unsold on shelves.

It's always 1-1. You should know this by now. (by the time you take into account VAT especially, remember that places in the US often quote prices without sales tax, whereas we get hit with that lovely 17.5% on everything)

Rip-off Britain, remember?

The PS3 will cost six hundred quid when it comes out.. Roll those numbers around your wallet for a few minutes. Six hundred portraits of the Queen.

Six Hundred.

Even I'm not that daft. See previous launch day performance.

I always get the new consoles but this one is going to have to wait. I am not going to buy the core system because it is missing to much stuff and i am not going to pay 600 dollars for the advance system. Can you say price drop
