Why is BitComet Evil?
Now I've stayed away from BitComet for some time, due to the bad press it gets for cheating on ratios etc. However, I've noticed while playing the kickban game that most of the peers who take a k or so of my upload while giving my about 9b/s are BitComet users. I've started banning BitComet users *unless* they're giving me good traffic, since as a rule they appear to be crap. Is this a known thing, or just my bad luck on torrents lately?

You're not the only one; I've seen trackers that have exclusively forbidden BitComet from accessing them. You just can't make a connection at all. I'm not sure what the problem is either, since I have my ratio properly configured...

I know BitComet used to have a lot of issues with leaching, but I'm not sure of the details either. I use the program myself, and I have noticed that I've done a lot less in the way of uploading with it, but seeing as I'm on Australian broadband, where every MB up or down counts to my monthly bandwidth limit, I figure I can be forgiven for that. ^^;;

For those of you who have problems with not being able to use the net while dowloading do to uploads choking the connection, consider getting cFosSpeed. Its a small program/driver that optimises the responses of the acknowledge packets which, in the end, lets you have both full download and upload at the same time with very good responsivness.
Especialy useful for DC++ users since DC hubs are often anal about no upload limiters.

I checked Wikipedia, and it matches what I've heard previously:
BitComet's upload slot limit is known not to work. BitComet has also been accused of favoring other BitComet users on uploads, hammering trackers, dropping piece requests, and other similar "cheating" techniques.

Really? How does this work? I understood that running a BT client wide open meant too many requests to handle, so the acks from websites etc got lost? In any case, I'll check it out - so long as I can still use my connection I don't care what speed I upload at. Not-Telstra = free uploads, like the rest of the western world.mmar wrote:For those of you who have problems with not being able to use the net while dowloading do to uploads choking the connection, consider getting cFosSpeed. Its explained in a clear, animated way here.
I've been using it for a while now. It works quite well for us DT-scheme bound DSL users (ie a 6:1 ratio between down/up resulting in a laughably low upload). I've noticed no downsides yet, and it works in the background transparently (only a small icon in the tray to accses configuration and monitoring functions).
Plus, it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside if you have unmetered broadband when using p2p apps
And its cheap, at 9 euro.
