You know, it's actualy funny cause its true.

Microsoft came in with a relativly low profile, their system is ALREADY on the market and selling like crazy, they used E3 to show off their long term goals to intigrate XBlive, mobile phones, windows and so on. Which is fair enough.

And they showed off Halo 3 which gets everyone going insane of course.

Nintendo jumps sideways from Microsoft and Sony, showing a radical new system that gets everyones attention instantly.

Sony...yeah, what do they have again? Appart from a system that isn't out yet that is going to cost a fuckload more then either of the two existing systems and essentialy not offer anything that really sets it appart from the 360?

The same thing they do every night, Pinky - try to take over the world by ripping off the competition.

What really annoys me with sony is that it's trying to ripoff both companies and not really understanding what really makes both sides tick.

The Xbox winner with live is not just online connectivity, its having the entire Live system, gamerscores, marketplace, etc. Sony is showing a shadow of that and trying to push their shitty entertainment on customers at that.
Nintendo's advantage isn't a simple new remote, it's entirely new innovative games. What does Sony do? Take half assed feature and try to make games use it as a gimmick feature.

TheInq had it nicely
STRINGER. OK, moving onto the PS3… what is the easiest way for us to lose the ball on this one?
SONY EXEC ONE. Price, if we make it too expensive then Nintendo and Microsoft will screw us to the wall. Most people will not pay more than what the XBOX360 costs.
STRINGER. Great, anything else?
SONY EXEC TWO. We could delay it for ages until box Microsoft has established itself in the market. That would make it harder for us to claw back our lucrative European and American base.
STRINGER. Not bad, need a few more here.

SONY EXEC THREE. Well it is a bit tricky but we could make two versions of the PS3. One will have all the wi-fi gubbins and other bits that people want and will make it different from the XBOX360 and the Revolution. But make this version even more expensive than the base unit.
STRINGER. Nice thinking. It would also split our marketing budget between two similar products and the punters wouldn't know what we were selling.

I've had at least five XBox 360's freeze on me (not at E3 though).

Heck, Robin Williams crashed Spore.

In any event, I really don't see Sony getting hurt very badly. It's a fucking expensive machine, but people are fanboys. People who had a PS2 and not an XBox won't buy an Xbox 360, they'll wait for a PS3. Or theywill buy both- fuck that's what my brother is doing. I don't see anything changing unless Sony fucks up some more.

I don't know how large the "parents buying consoles for their kids" market is as a proportion of the whole, but I can tell you that all the PS2 owners I know in real-life fall into that category, and when you tell them that the PS3 retails for $600 US, they will show you just how little brand loyalty they have.

Good point. I certainly wouldn't pay $800AUD (or whatever it is once you've converted the currency) but then again I just don't buy consoles. My brother handles that, I just buy the games for it. (The Gamecube I got for my 21st, from my brother)

In any event, I think Microsoft is a larger threat to Sony's current dominance than Nintendo at this point. Heck, announcing that GTA IV will appear *only* on XBOX 360 was a marketing masterstroke.

I suppose it will sell well to the type of person who actually uses both of the graphic card slots in his computer's shiny new SLI motherboard. Can't imagine that's a huge demographic, though.

That demographic is also the same demographic that is an hardcore PC gaming market. I'm not sure the same market would pick up a console when they have their computers.

Of the 5 kids I know that were gonna buy a PS3, 3 of them are opting for nintendo, one is opting for an XBox (As a birthday present, because his parents aren't gonna pay over $500,) and only one said he was still getting a PS3. His rationale? "It cost's more money, so it must be good. Besides, my parents are paying for it anyway."

Bottom line: All the people who are now opting for a Wii are doing so because the PS3's huge price is driving them away.

I'm intending to get one (not at launch, but certainly not too long after) simply as the PS3 is likely to have the largest amount of games I actually want to play. I play various Japanese games that simply won't appear on the 360, and whose developers I'm not sure will just jump over to Nintendo. I'll likely get a Wii as well, and the 360 just doesn't interest me right now.

PS3 sadly is not going to sell by virtue of being a good system it'd seem. I can't think of one reason I'd pick up a Ps3 over a 360 hardware wise. The only reason to get a PS3 it'd seem is that there are some developers who will only work with Sony. Have fun playing anything major by Square, Konami, Nippon Ichi, on anything except the PS3.

Pretty sad. :/

The funniest thing I've heard about the PS3 cost issue is from, of course, Peter Moore, chief PR-ninja from Microsoft.

The line? It's obvious.

Why would people buy a PS3 when they can have a 360 and a Wii for the same price?

Even professional Xbox fanboys are promoting a competitor, because the other one has just shot themselves in the foot with a rocket launcher.

No-one I have talked to is actually looking forward to the PS3. It's everybody's third choice console.

it would have been a better joke if they had simple called it the sony Π

after all it's only halfway copying the nintendo or xbox
we never expect them to complete finishing it
and everyone knows it's just the PS 3
