I tried to replace folder icons (under folder options --> filetypes), but as a result of that, every time I double click a folder, the contents open in a new window. This is annoying and I want it to bring up content in the same window.

In Windows Explorer, Tools->Folder Options and set browsing folders to happen in the same window. If that doesn't help, then I don't know how to fix your problem.
