Direct 2 Drive..

Post by Trytostaydead »

Okay, so I just purchased Hitman Blood Money through Direct 2 Drive, since I hate popping in CDs and whatnot to play 'em I thought I'd give it a try. What a BIG mistake. Right now transferring at less than a 1k/s. Maybe it's just really congested traffic since it's using the @#$% IGN download manager service.

Maybe tomorrow will be better, but wow.. just wow.

I got the MA version of Indigo Prophecy with D2D, and to be honest, the process was almost entirely painless. The transfer speed from Fileplanet was top notch (but then I subscribe), and the only problem I had was that my unzip software wasn't up to date.

Do I also have to subscribe to File Planet to get speed? I thought buying it would give me all the speed I want?

No, you don't have to subscribe, but having a free account for Fileplanet is always handy. The only issue is that you may have to wait for the download to start, but once it does, you should get good speeds.

Fileplanet subscription is $19.99 a year, a ton of free exclusives Betas and unlimited download speeds. Using a certain T3 from a certain military branch I have succesfuly used my Fileplanet account to achive 8.5MB download speeds.

Note thats 8500Kb+ download speeds. But that's only for Fileplanet subscribers. Free users must wait for the download to start and I believe are capped at 200kb.

*Edit final note on Direct to Drive. It might look like your computer has stoped responding both once you finish downloading and once you run the multi-gig file it's going to "hang" for a bit. Both because of the massive amount of data your trying to write a massive amount of data your trying to read at the same time.

Just give it a minute once you open it, Windows does not like messing with .exe's bigger than a gig.

8500kb/s?

And I was happy with my 300kb/s, never again.

Um... OC3 line? The cost for this beast is more than you could afford, even if you paid everything you made in a year for it.

You could start to approach it with the 30M/5M tier of Verizon FIOS, though. I reckon that would allow for about 3200KB/s download speeds.

Not much from me, I'm afraid. FIOS is still fairly limited in penetration, and probably won't be available to most people for quite some time. The fastest DSL I can get is 3Mb, Comcast cable offers up to 6Mb but is significantly more expensive, and both are limited to 768Kb upload.

Worse, there are tales of bandwidth usage limits in some parts of the US. I'm thankful I don't have to deal with such oppression, but it's a shameful reflection on America. Image

And let's not even touch on the barbaric Internet wasteland known as Australia... Image

Thats some sad state of affairs.

So I bought a subscription and now I'm flying. I think that sucks. If you buy a game from them, they should at least give you the fastest server for those files.

Fileplanet came first, Direct to Drive was something that came down the line later on and is acutaly a seperate part of the whole Gamespy/IGN internet love-fest.

And for those wondering about the 8500KB... Yes it was not my connection, it was a brief shinning moment when I had both SA's bribed that when they took down our website and took our company offline for maintance on the servers, there was a brief hour long window when nothing else was runnning off our T3 line but me... and it was.... words fail me, the speed... the shear SPEED. If I had eyes left with which to bleed, they would have!

Are you really using a connection that gives you better than 200kbps from most sources? If not, then the limitation shouldn't matter.

I agree it would be nice if they did that for the files that you buy through D2D, but the way it works, you buy the activation key for the file through D2D, but it's hosted on the download service of GS and IGN. The current system could be improved, sure, but it works pretty well as is, and hey, as far as I'm concerned, Fileplanet membership perks are well worth the price of admission.

I'm on DSL. The difference felt is astronomical, from less than one k a second to about 80-90

That can't be right. Free users have a cap of more than twice the speed you're getting. Whatever problem you had, it's most likely due to something else (tm).

Too bad the program doesn't let me select mirrors.

I wish they'd just let me directly download from them or use my own download manager.
