Floppy drive problems

I know I know floppy drives are old tech but to my father and myself it is still needed.
My father's computer's floppy drive's light is on even though there is no disk. If I put a disk in it, the drive won't recognize any it or any disk I put in.
I've shut off the computer and when I turn it back on the light is on and stays on. There is also the problem that any disk I do put in ends up corrupted because at first I'll be able to access the information on my computer but won't be recognized on my father's computer. But once I put that disk back in my floppy drive, my computer no longer is able to access the contents of the floppy. Either I get a message to insert a disk or I get a message saying "A:\ is not accessible. No ID address mark was found on the floppy disk."
What is wrong? Defective floppy drive?
