Bass comes in perfectly over headphones. Due to the arrangement of Sound Card-->Left Speaker-->Headphones made possible via a headphone jack on the speaker itself; the sound card, midrange/tweeters, and the wires and connections thereof have been effectively ruled out as the source of the failure. This leads to the subwoofer box itself being the failure point.

No faults in either the Event Logs, Device Manager, or sensors; all temperatures, RPMs, and voltages are within normal parameters. Das Battleship's purring along like a kitten...

I have no idea what your problem is, but I do have a recommendation. Klipsch Promedia speakers. For less than $300, you get something that is THX Certified, and unparalleled well into the thousands of dollars.

Thanks for the nice suggestion, but our budget only allows for something an order of magnitude less expensive. Plus there's the issue of whether to get a good and technologically current Audigy card to par with the ProMedias. Speakers that sound absolutely great tend to be just as great at telling you they don't like your sucky on-board soundcard they're hitched to.

That's a good point, I forgot I shelled out for an Audigy all those years back.

You should crack open the box - it sort of sounds like the power was cut, and it powered down giving the gradual decrease in output. It didn't pop, so hopefully it won't be broken.

My subwoofer is technically the base of my computer's speaker system, so if it died, the whole thing would be dead until I got a new one.

Internal fuse burned out possibly? There should be a place for a fuse in it somewhere. Of course, I have to say that you can only get really shitty speakers for $30.

Though you could get a fairly decent set of computer speakers for $40.

Likely, but its outer casing is specifically designed not to be opened without destroying it...

Unfortunately I can't remember the name or manufacturer, but the speakers I'm using are pretty good- I've had them since 200, when they cost a good, soild $500 or so, but by now they should have been reduced in price significantly, if you can find any...

Still can't find out the exact make, so I'll just tell you what to look for: Black, 6.1 surround system. Everything gets controlled through the subwoofer, which is nice and solid, about 3/4 of a foot high and a foot long. The speakers themselves have about 20 feet of cable, are about the size of a tin of pepsi, but a bit squatter. THey've got a thin neck connecting them to their base.

If you can find anything that matches those, snap it up. Even if it's as old as mine, it'll last you a good few years yet, and it's not fussy about sound cards.
