Has Sony just fucking lost it?

Turns out Sony is now claiming the Xbox 360 is a rip off of the yet to be even seen fully functional PS3.

http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=69828
Speaking to OPM, SCEA head Kaz Hirai accuses Microsoft of copycatting Sony with the Xbox 360, saying he wishes the American company would "come up with some strategies of their own."

The Official PlayStation Magazine article shows Sony on the defensive as Microsoft continues to sell more and more Xbox 360 units, particularly in the United States.

At one point, Hirai says that "every time we go down a path, we look behind and [Microsoft is] right there -- we just can't shake these guys."

Hirai also slams Microsoft for its decision to release an HD-DVD add-on for the Xbox 360, calling the company's decision to release the next-gen console "too early" and "too premature." Hirai explains how he thinks consumers will be confused by the HD-DVD add-on -- "does it work for games? Is it just for movies?"
WTF?

Damn MS copying hard drive based consoles and integrated online serivces from Sony, and that stupid Nintendo with their rip off controllers!

Pot, meet kettle.
At one point, Hirai says that "every time we go down a path, we look behind and [Microsoft is] right there -- we just can't shake these guys."
I guess that would make sense if the Xbox 360 was not, you know, already available.

I think they're really trying to become the world's largest corporate bunch of clowns, at least. They've got Enron to tackle, but if they can rake in money from the PS3 after all of this furore, they may have them licked.

Sony....
Where have I heard that name before?

Oh yeah, they're that company that used to make top flight televisions and were innovators in consumer electronics, but they later went 'Hollywood', make overpriced, overstyled crap, and now are only a pale imitation of what they once were. :P

How the fuck did MS rip-off the PS3?

I love how Sony is acusing Microsoft of stealing ideas yet couldn't even come up with one example for proof. Poor Sony has dug itself into such a hole they're blaming other companies for the problems they have. Just like the GOP

If it wasn't for stunts like this would we even see the PS3 in the news at all?

That's a hard question, let me run that question through a google search using the phrase "Sony news not related to bitching about having competition"

And the result is? Zero returns!

(Edit:This is the Colter method of news searchs when she rights her slanted books so she can claim that the news media never covered something)

"Just" ?

They lost it ever since they started believing their own PS3 hype. I'm getting flashbacks to Atari's "ZOMG 64-bit !!" nonsense.

Hirai must have some very, very stupid customers then. While there's bound to be mouthbreathers who can't figure out that you don't suck on the controllers, I don't think the X360's demographic is quite on that level of retardedness.

That's because you're going backwards, you idiot. They're ahead of you.

I decided never to buy a Sony consumer electronic product again, after I had severe problems with my laptop (now gone).

Let's see. XBox360 came out at least a year ahead of what PS3's going to do. Oh no! they have a controller which is the ultimate evolution of the old-style Dual Shock, or XBox1 controller. Oh my!

They made the utterly abysmal PS2 online play GOOD by giving a unified, company-operated service. Wowie! That's a total ripoff. Sorta like saying a corvette rips off a model T.

"Nobody'll buy HD-DVD! Why would they want to? LOL! BTW, buy my Bluray please?"

Harai needs to go back to shouting Riiiidge Raaaaceeeer at the top of his lungs.

And the weak spots are deliberately exposed during a brief period of the GIANT CRABs 8-bit constantly recycled movement!

I'm starting to wonder if this is some kind of plan (which I had assumed months ago with Sony's insane behaviour) or if the people involved are just rubes. Seriously, styling themselves as the originator of the console world is absurd, and there's no mileage in it. Maybe in Japan this goes over well and they're pandering to their audience?

Can anybody confirm this?

I just heard on the new episode of Attack of the Show that Sony expects PS3 games to run from 59.99 to a hundred bucks each.

That's old news. They've confirmed at least 60 bucks for a new game for ages now. I think 360's new games are 60 USD as it is, or 50?

If Final Fantasy proves one thing to you, it should be that there's a huge market in Japan (and everywhere else) for The Same Thing As Last Time But More So.

The PS3 is the PS2 but more so. It's even more complicated to program for, it's got an even more fiddly architecture, and they're overstating it's capabilities and general worth even more.

This, I believe, is Sony's plan. People ate up the big lie that was the PS2's launch promises, they're hoping that an even bigger lie, told even more often, will find purchase.

They obviously haven't noticed that the PS2 Big Lie hasn't been forgotten. The number of times I hear someone say 'yeah it sounds good, but the PS2 is a supercomputer that will take over our lives' or something to illustrate gaming dishonesty is significant. :)

"But, Microsoft did rip off Sony's PS3 design! You see, Microsoft has a time machine, so in 2010, MS went back in time to... Well, it's a complicated story, but it involves a twisted plot with intrigue, friendship, betrayals and... Trust me, it makes sense."

Oddly, I'm pretty sure the above paragraph is not far from what Mr. Hirai is thinking about this subject.

The funny thing is that, in the end, none of this bullshit will matter for a large segment of the population. Parents make the decision to buy a game console based on what their kids want, and kids want game consoles based on what their friends have. There's a real herd mentality in place, and it's largely driven by wanting certain "must-have" games.

I wonder if there any number on game console market demographics, ie- how much of the market is twenty-somethings who play themselves and how much of the market is parents buying for their kids. I have an X-Box and a Gamecube and I never play either of them. I bought them for my sons.

Considering that a lot of twenty-somethings don't have the type of disposable income necessary to buy some of these consoles, I'm guessing it's mostly the latter.

Kids are themselves quite expensive to take care of. The twenty-something who doesn't have a family to look after may easily have more money to burn than someone a few years old who earns more but has a family to consider.

Does Microsoft have "do crazy shit" aura or something?

When Microsoft enters some market you almost always get the market leader doing some truely crazy shit which practically gives the market to Microsoft.
