HoI2: Annexing Bulgaria as the USSR.

While playing as the USSR, you almost invariably have to deal with Germany and her cronies. While doing this, with Germany's crony states (Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Bulgaria) you are given an option when you capture enough of their provinces. You can either:
A: Annex them.
B: Create a puppet state.
I enjoy this flexibility, as each has pros and cons. Though I'm never given the option to annex Bulgaria. It shits me to no end.
Is there a way to annex it?

You should be able to annex Bulgaria the "normal" way. Go to the Diplomacy screen, and choose "Annex" as an option. If it is greyed out, that generally means that they have at least one VP province left somewhere you need to take.
The option you mentioned is an event - like the fall of France. So if Bulgaria isn't included, you don't get the option.

The event saying "Make them a puppet!" appears before I get all of the VPs. I don't get the option to not make them a puppet.

Hmm. Then the event takes precedent before the annexing option is available. All I can suggest is releasing them, and then DOWing them. Use a cheat to eliminate the dissent penalty if you think it isn't deserved. After all, you are playing the Red Tide of History. Not a milkmaid.
In the few recent games (Doomsday), Bulgaria hasn't survived to begin with - Hungary and/or Romania have annex it. So
Another question for HOI users. Has anyone seen the Spanish Nationalist's actually win? The "standard" pattern (Italy and Germany supports the Nationalists, Soviets support the Republicans. Everyone else neutral) now leads to an almost total Republican victory within no more than 12 months. Before I bought Doomsday, the split was more like a 2/3 Nationalist, 1/3 Republican victory (with a bit of cheating to deal with the reluctance to invade the final province with 15 militia in it) if all of the normal events fired. Anything odd (UK, France getting involved) will swing things away from this "standard".

Yes they do. They win in about half of the games I play. I never really pay attention to them though.

This is highly annoying but somewhat accurate; Bulgarians are historically Russophile and they refused to contribute significant effort to the German war against the USSR. When the USSR knocked on their door, they left the Axis and declared war on Germany; however this didn't save their government and Stalin installed a puppet state.
There are a few nations who get surrender events like this... I became very angry at the game over Siam, which I completely overrun and prepared to install a puppet state in as the USA, but then they threw out this bullshit "Siam Gives Up" which amounted to a white peace... in spite of the fact that I controlled their entire country. Bullshit.

Fair enough, though I should think that if I can put a hammer and sickle in Berlin before the close of 1941, I can do this.

Good point. That's what put me off playing as Imperial America. I'd invaded Germany in 1942, annexed them soon after, then had to give the land back.
As soon as I can be arsed, I'm going to start making a lot of changes in the events.

Obviously I'm suffering from extreme bad luck. In the last 10 I've started, all 10 have gone Republican.
Rather nice from a German perspective since I have a good reason to invade Spain and take out Gibraltar. As an autocratic dictator, I needsome pretext for crushing those insignificant, left leaning socialistic peasants.

I've only played DD, still working on the first game where I actually commited myself fully to finishing. Seen the Spanish Civil War end twice, both Nationalist victory.

Hrm... I'm reminded of my failed experiences at playing an Imperialist Canada. When I invaded Guatemala in 1937, the U.S. attacked me, but despite my capture of the entire US mainland, I never got any sort or 'Sue for Peace' option, and I couldn't annex them since I had no navy. Bah.
