Luckily I managed to google this one up before I pulled out too much of my hair. Is there a more elegant method of making windows connect to the non-SID-broadcasting network than ripping all the SID-broadcasting networks out of the preferred list?

This is pretty much the stupidest windows thing I've found this year.

Probably not, considering that according to Microsoft, Windows is designed to behave in that fashion. But then, I doubt that your situation is terribly common.

Why the hell do people need to disable SSID?

There is no point and as that Knowledgebase suggests, windows do not play nice with nobeacon AP.

The only reason I can think of is that it keeps Joe Clueless next door from accidentally connecting to your unencrypted network when he turns on his laptop.

Of course in this scenario, who'd be the bigger clueless idiot: the one who accidentally connects to someone else's network, or the one who leaves his wireless network unencrypted?

Faram's more the expert on this than I am, but can't you avoid the issue altogether by using your card's management software instead of the Windows client?

It only prevents an accidental connection.
If someone sets out to connect to your wireless AP, not broadcasting your SSID won't stop them.
The only real security for wireless networking is to use the strongest level of encryption your AP and NIC support.

You guys are getting sidetracked from the main point, which is that windows won't stay connected to the network I want it to stay connected to unless I force the wireless manager through contortions.

What about the NIC's own software?
The Intel software for my card lets me select 'preferred networks' and even set the order in which it tries to connect.

That's how I did it in the end. Though it makes you wonder what the system software is for.
